I have one up on you.
Just as Madara is being severely wounded, that's when one of his sharingan's abilities which is a gengetsu, activated. Let's not forget every single sharingan has a special ability apart from the rest.
And that's how he survived(clue is how the moon disappeared right after he was stabbed).

Yes, I think the moment he was stabbed, his Sharingan activated a genjutsu to escape death

If Madara managed to put Hashirama under a genjutsu, he could absolutely avoid being stabbed and even kill Hashirama but from observing Madara's wound it is not so . . . . . . Also as per your theory when Madara's EMS activated then Hashirama had both his shoulder pads and Madara his armor but when the Genjutsu deactivated Hashirama had only one shoulder pad and madara did not have his armor, which suggests that there might have been servere fighting after Kurama was put down and it was real . . . . Also did Madara get fooled by a Bushin even in his Genjutsu? . . . . .

Also that symbol on the moon can actually be a an sfx for movement or noises of rain:

2. That star also denotes a quick reaction.... now the question arises why did Hashirama gave a startled quick look at the cliffs? As far as we know Hashirama was not a great sensor..... but did even with what skill he had, did he sense someone on the cliff?

Also as I said Also that symbol on the moon can actually be a an sfx for movement or noises of rain:

3. Also even if Hashirama was under the genjutsu which wore off.... he might have checked Madara's 'corpse' after that as he isnt the kind to leave his dear friend turned enemy's for the carrion eaters . . . .

In my opinion we are missing something vital here . . . .

Why don't you accept the Izanagi theory?

And they have fought many times before. Always Hashi won. I think Madara just realized that he will never be able to defeat Hashi so he resorted to a trick- but if it had been a simple genjutsu, he could have used that any time before...He realized that he has to make Hashi believe that he is dead and just get the DNA for future perspectives.
It's possible. When an Uchiha uses Izanagi do they not lose the Light in their eyes?? Which makes me think... when Madara 'rescued' Obito (when he was connected to the Gedo Mazou statue) did he not mention that he needed a Sharingan (when Obito was all wrapped up in his healing bed). But then again, Madara went on to acquire the Rinnegan. i doubt he would have been able to do that if his Sharingan was disfunctional.
