The best explaination I can give to Madara taking Hashirama's DNA is Hashirama's power. Honestly, given what hashirama's cell can do, I think it is greater than Rinnegan alone. Besides, I think Rinnegan cannot work for an Uchiha unless they have a body like Hashi's or an Uzumaki body. This mean an uchiha with his base body cannot use optimally the Rinnegan - they don't have the life force required.
That makes sense as well. As I said before, how naive can someone be to make a plan that cannot be completed within one single life, then putting your entire trust into your pawns who indeed both betray you? The risk is way too high.
I think it is a combination of both theories in the end. Not 100% planned, some parts were just done by chance and 'see what happens'.
Another reason for this 'plan' could be his obsession with Hashirama. The only person who can defeat him. He has a bit of an obsession with the whole ying yang logic. Zetsu or himself, the ultimate being, a combination of Hashirama and himself. Who knows how his brain really worked? Only way to find out would be his own flashbacks. And would he even explain it all out? Doubtful.
