There is a very clear dichotomy between moon and sun.
Hagaromo sealed the Juubi with his brother. He states "sealed it within us" that means they split the Juubi among them.
He also mentioned that he split the Juubi that was inside of him into the Bijuu. Why did he say, "the Juubi that was inside of him" instead of the Juubi? It's as if he is talking about his half of the Juubi.
If Hagaromo's Juubi became the Moon, his brother's Juubi very well could have became the Sun.
Everything seen in Hagaromo's flashback was dark and the only things in the sky were crescent moon and the "full moon". It was essentially the Dark Ages for the Narutoverse.
But I think that we have established already that Ashura is represented by the sun not the moon.
If Ashura is represented by the sun, then why does the sunlike object above him not light up the sky? It can't be the full moon because Kishi has made it very clear that the Sun represents Ashura and Moon represents Indara.
Hence, the "moon" under Ashura was actually the stone that eventually became the Sun. This brings me to my next point,
Those two constructs were just the sealing stones for the Juubi's. They didn't become the Sun and Moon until the Juubi's were seal inside them.
Perhaps the crescent moon was filled, like a cavity being filled by a dentist, with Hagaromo's Juubi and the "full moon" was filled with Hagaromo's brother's Juubi, somehow causing glow with bright heat.
The cavity of the moon was probably filled with CT, stuffing the Gedo Mazou inside it, creating a full solid moon.
Before people counter with scientific arguements, note that the NV sun and moon are not scientific, they are based off of elements of Eastern Mythology.
Look at Hagaromo's staff. One end is the moon, the other end is the sun.
The brothers and the moon and sun.
