Well Zetsu knew of Minato and i doubt they would keep something like that a secret from Madara.
They didnt know his real name but they knew him by his nickname "Konoha's Yellow Flash"
Considering Zetsu's role I'd imagine that he researched their abilities.

He would have had to researched before the Akatsuki's formation to know anything about Minato. Also, there's the fact that Kisih likes to have characters throw around hype. For instance "Madara is immortal"(stated by Itachi). I've also seen Minato fans post an image stating that Minato had unrivaled strength.
Let me just say this. Don't trust hype alone. I'm a fan of the fate series, and berserker was hyped to be the strongest. Yet he was beaten in a one-on-one fight. There were also 2 others that got hyped as "the strongest" yet were beaten by characters who didn't have those titles in a one-on-one fight.
You don't trust hype in a series unless it's consistent. If I went by hype, I'd say that Kurama could obliterate PS with a single tail swipe.

The simple fact is that Hiruzen is nowhere near hashirama's level. Sure he has impressive abilities such as multiple elements and Enma, but it's still not enough to live up to his former (yes former) hype. Hashirama has the same hype as Hiruzen and it comes from Madara, someone who actually fought him and had Zetsu as a spy throughout Hiruzen's prime.

Hashirama's power was so great, that it was dismissed as mere rumor. Hiruzen's potential was comprehendable, but not Hashirama's. This could explain why Hiruzen received his distorted hype. Hashirama's techniques were shrouded by myth, which means he could never have been adequately compared to Hiruzen by the current generation.
Need I remind you what Hashirama's capable of?

Hashirama can use wood style defensively to survive even a TBB from Kurama. Bare in mind that this is base Hashirama. SM Hashirama is capable of more. There is nothing Hiruzen has or is hinted to have that can counter this.

Once you can actually bring a logical case that Hiruzen has techniques that can match this, then you can brag Hiruzen's the strongest hokage. He's strong and is worthy of the title of hokage, but he is not the strongest.
Sorry, but the author himself stated that Hiruzen was the strongest. We just saw him unleash a little of what made him God of Shinobi and The Professor.
Edit: Just keep arguing with the creator of the manga. I'm sure you lot know more than him about his creation.

I'm sure the creator changed his mind. The writer gave no hints that Hiruzen's stronger. Heck, some people question if it was made up. I can't even find the chapter that supposedly said that.
Also, the scan says that Hiruzen was said to be the strongest by Iruka, not the author. Sorry, but I'd trust the judgement of a powerful and experienced warrior over a fodder who only gets his knowledge from a book. Kishi gave Hashirama the title that he originally gave Hiruzen.

When something is said in the general sense, it is the author speaking to the reader, I.e, how jutsus work and so on. Kishi didn't change his mind. There is no evidence of that. Hiruzen has never been shown his prime strength. Hashirama has. So, logically you cannot say Hiruzen is weaker until his prime is shown.
