What do you mean, you can still use psn, Netflix, Hulu, the Internet, etc without ps+ something you can't do for Xbox

Plus it's cheap and you get a crap ton of crazy deals and free games for ps+ and no ads. Something Xbox doesn't do.

Sony on PS4 Content 'If You Buy It, You Own It'
Speaking to Yahoo! Games during E3 Andrew House, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, adressed the company 's media content policy saying "if you buy it, you own it."

House says that there is an "increasing nervousness" about what content ownership means and says Sony doesn't consider the issue is a "storm in a teacup" adding that the company takes such issues very seriously.

"You could argue that it's a storm in a teacup - a very vocal minority of passionate gamers," House commented. "This huge outpouring of feeling around the concept of ownership of content. But I have to say I don't see it that way.

"I think we saw a lightning rod for feeling that has been bubbling up - that doesn't just apply to games, but to entertainment overall. I think there's an increasing nervousness about what ownership of content means. In the absence of physical goods.

When that nervourness was starting to migrate into control over physical goods that consumers have purchased, that was a bridge too far.

"I want to be very clear about where we have been on this issue: I think there's a danger we could be seen to have reacted and capitalised on a situation. When we first announced PS4 in February, people were saying, 'Oh, Sony's being coy' - almost with some implicit suspicion.
"It struck us as very odd.

We had no intention of changing our position - it hasn't changed from what it's been for the last fifteen years. We believe that if you buy it, you own it, you're able to do with it what you want."

At Sony's pre-E3 media briefing this week the company announced that there would be no change in their used game policy for PS4 which met with a tremendous response after Microsoft revealed a raft of measures to limit game lending and reselling.

Sony will allow third party publishers to block the online component of games using something like an Online Pass but it seems many publishers - including EA who first instigated the practice - have no intention of doing so on next-gen consoles.

PS4: auto-update, social features free to all users
Some PlayStation 3 features currently restricted to PlayStation Plus subscribers will be free to PlayStation 4 owners.

Speaking to Videogamer, SCEE UK & Ireland MD Fergal Gara said auto-update, which is currently available only to PlayStation 3 owners with a PlayStation Plus subscription, will be free for all PlayStation 4 owners.

He also noted that the console’s “social features” will not be restricted to subscribers – possibly including the newly-revealed cross-game chat feature.

“If you choose not to subscribe we are still gating relatively little in many senses, so access to online catch-up TV and online movie services sit outside of the gate, for example,” he said.

“The social features of PS4 and PS4 games sit out of the subscription servic,. things like auto-updates on PS4 sit outside of PlayStation Plus, so we’re trying to be as balanced and as fair as we possibly can.”

A PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer on the PS4. Current subscriptions will automatically include PlayStation 4 content. PlayStation Plus also provides free games, discounts and access to exclusive content.

Sony details PS4 PlayStation Plus changes
Auto-updates no longer behind paywall, PS4 social features free, Sony confirms. "We're trying to be as balanced and as fair as we possibly can."

Sony has detailed some of the changes due to be implemented to PlayStation Plus with the arrival of PlayStation 4, telling VideoGamer.com that both auto-updates and the "social features of PS4" will not require a PlayStation Plus subscription to access.

Catch-up TV and online movie services will continue to be free to all PS4 users, although an additional fee may be required to access back-catalogue PS3 titles once the Gaikai streaming service is introduced next year.

A PlayStation Plus account will also be required to access PS4's online multiplayer functionality – something Sony says will allow it to "invest significantly" in PlayStation Network to help lower downtimes and improve its performance.

"It is time to charge, but it is time to charge and still continue to deliver phenomenal value," SCEE UK & Ireland MD Fergal Gara told VideoGamer.com during E3.

"A PlayStation Plus subscriber for PlayStation 4 comes away with a hell of a lot. First of all, the subscription applies across all three platforms [PS4, PS3 & PS Vita], so if you have the three platforms then you have an instant game collection on all three. So that's hugely powerful in its own right. But it is true to say that the online multiplayer element for PS4, you do require the subscription in order to [make use] of that.

"If you choose not to subscribe we are still gating relatively little in many senses, so access to online catch-up TV and online movie services sit outside of the gate, for example. The social features of PS4 and PS4 games sit out of the subscription service... things like auto-updates on PS4 sit outside of PlayStation Plus, so we're trying to be as balanced and as fair as we possibly can. If you choose to pay the subscription, yes, you get one important element of modern-day gameplay, but you also get fantastic value in games, including the PlayStation Plus Edition of DriveClub."

Auto-update functionality had previously only been available to PS Plus subscribers on PS3, and though it isn't yet clear what Gara means by PS4's "social features", it's possible he could be referring to the console's broadcasting and video upload features.

The service seems relatively more open than Microsoft's Xbox LIVE service, too, which blocks users from accessing services like Netflix and 4OD unless they're an Xbox LIVE Gold subscriber.

Whether PlayStation Plus users will be required to pay an additional fee for access to PS3 title streaming through Gaikai, however, is still undecided.

"In short, we haven't decided," said Gara when asked whether the firm plans to introduce additional PlayStation Plus tiers to accommodate backwards-compatibility streaming. "The Gaikai developments are exciting. The Remote Play feature which we're particularly excited about not just benefits PS4 but PS Vita - that uses some Gaikai technology.

"But secondly, the full cloud gaming service comes a bit later – we announced that 2014 will start to see that introduced for PS3 titles in the US, and we'll start to see a gradual increase in consoles, titles, devices and countries involved as we go forward, so there is a plan there to bring the PlayStation experience to more devices out of the cloud using the Gaikai that will broaden over time.

"Will that be part of PlayStation Plus? I genuinely don't know. Will that require some other, different charging mechanism? Perhaps. We just haven't sat down to answer that question yet."

PlayStation 4 launches worldwide this Christmas.

PS4 pre-orders doubling Xbox One at GameStop
With the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 both having their retail price announced at E3 last week, gamers can finally begin pre-ordering their next-gen console of choice. And with that, early data indicates the PS4 is ahead of the Xbox One in pre-orders by approximately three units to two during the period between Monday, June 10 to Wednesday, June 12. DualShockers has put together a nice little comparison between the two consoles, but over the weekend we found out a few more details.
The PS4 is outselling the Xbox One by two units to one at GameStop, a GameStop representative told GameZone. This was according to a local retailer who didn't specify whether this was chain wide or just at the individual store; however, I think we can presume, given what we already know about the two systems' sales, that the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One overall. Whether it's at a rate of two to one everywhere is still a bit of a mystery.
We've reached out to GameStop for further clarification.

Fergal Gara on what PS Plus gets you on PS4 - a better network and cross game chat (finally)
At E3 Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Fergal Gara spoke more about PS Plus on PS4, the move to a paid online service and how cross game chat is so on this time.

Fergal Gara on what PS Plus gets you on PS4
When PS4 arrives at the end of the year you’ll now have to pay for a PS Plus subscription to play online. Something Gara says Sony had to, “agonise over for a very long time”. Ultimately two things drove the move to new paid model. “First of all, we wanted to introduce the console at a healthy price-point compared with PS3,” admits Gara, who claims that was, “front and centre in our thinking and our planning for years”.

The second decision maker was a desire to introduce more network features. In that respect Gara lists things like, “the social features you’ve seen demonstrated or more of a world-class network”. That last point has seen Sony, “investing in a higher performance network”. This will apparently not only only add, “new things”, but will also provide a, “better performance [and] better reliability”.

As he points out: to improve or add to the current infrastructure, “there’s investment required”. PS Plus, in Gara’s own words was, “a tremendously well-received service” and thus Sony saw an, “opportunity to extend that”. Gara admits that does mean, “we’re charging for online multiplayer” but that it offers, “immense value for that subscription charge” (currently £39.99 annually) adding that it, “it applies across three consoles, includes content across all three consoles”.

An interesting move on PS4 is also adding free, albiet feature limited, versions of full games, such as DriveClub. That’s due in part to what Gara says is a desire to make PS4, “exciting right from day one. So we’ve introduced a version of DriveClub right from day one in there so you could argue [your PS Plus subscription] is sort of paid back almost immediately. So we still think it’s tremendous value”.

So to clarify, is cross chat
a part of PS4? “It’s there”

One interesting thing that’s finally, finally coming is the near mythical cross game chat. Gara admits, “I suppose wasn’t delivered upon for PS3″, the explanation apparently because, “it became technology that would be difficult to place on the architecture we had in place”. As a result Gara says, “it was one to fix for PlayStation 4, and it is fixed”. So, just to clarify: is cross chat a part of PS4? “It’s there”.

PS4 components reportedly start shipping in June
The upstream supply chain reportedly has already started shipping orders for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) in June, and volumes may reach one million units per month by September for the year-end holidays. Meanwhile, volume shipments for Microsoft's Xbox One are expected to start in the third quarter, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

The PS4 reportedly is manufactured by Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and the Xbox One by Pegatron Technology, while their components are supplied by Lite-On IT, Lite-On Technology, Foxlink, Asia Optical, Kinko Optical, Newmax, Foxconn Technology, Coxon, Nishoku, Elite Advanced Laser, Tong Hsing Electronic Industries, Adda, Delta Electronics, Chicony Electronics and Neng Tyi, the sources said. However, Sony and Foxconn declined to comment about the rumors.

Sony: 'of course' PS4 can do cloud computing

Microsoft has been keen to promote Xbox One's use of the cloud. Xbox One's official website, for example, states that "thanks to the power of the cloud, Xbox One will keep getting better." Cloud computing supposedly makes Xbox One four times more powerful. It also justifies why Xbox One is effectively an always-on console.

But what about Sony's next-gen machine? Sure, it can stream games via the cloud-powered Gaikai. But can it also follow Microsoft's step in offloading computation to the cloud? "Of course," Sony's Shuhei Yoshida said.

"Linking, matchmaking... there are already many computations being done on the cloud side," Yoshida told Polygon. And although PS4 won't require an internet connection to use, Yoshida said that "if your title needs [an] online connection to provide some online features: Go for it."

There you go. Both consoles can do cloud computing. Although be warned--it's all pretty much a load of rubbish either way. Hooray for marketing!

Sony’ s PS4 will launch in Nov 21 2013, A new PS4 ad spotted on The Sun’ s printed magazine, According to the ad, PS4 will release in Nov 21 this year for £349.

If you remember, PS3 console was released in Nov 11 2006.

The official PS4 release date is currently penciled in for ‘Holiday 2013′, which most-likely means in time for Thanksgiving in the US, so a mid-November PS4 launch date, So it seems Nov 21 is legit.

Note: The Sun is a very popular magazine in UK.

PS4 Pre-Order Launch Day Bundles at Amazon Dominate Movers and Shakers
PlayStation 4 pre-orders for the Launch Day edition sold out several days ago at online retailer Amazon.com, yet the guaranteed launch day console is still appearing in the top three bestsellers chart that is updated hourly. That's possible because of some console and game bundles that are picking up pre-order steam.
As of today, June 15, there are a total of four PS4 Launch Day bundles available to pre-order at Amazon. Grabbing any one of them now will guarantee receipt of the PS4 console and game included with the bundle when the console launches in mid-November. To recap, there's nothing different about the Launch Day PS4 console other than its guaranteed to be available on the day the console is released.

Two of the PS4 Launch Day bundles at Amazon attaches the PS4 console and an inclusive DualShock 4 controller with a launch game. These bundles are for Watch Dogs and Knack, and are priced at $459 each.

The other two bundles include a 1-year subscription card to PlayStation Plus, a necessity to play multiplayer games. At $499 for each bundle, buyer are saving $10 off the price of the PlayStation Plus card. The two PS4 Launch Day bundles with a PlayStation Plus card are for Battlefield 4 and Killzone: Shadow Fall.

PlayStation 4 Launch Day pre-orders are sure to start drying up here soon considering how popular they continue to be nearly a week removed from when they first went live this past Monday. The top four positions on Amazon's Movers and Shakers chart in video games are occupied by each of these bundles, with Watch Dogs in the top spot. Sony is expected to continue pre-selling PS4 consoles and bundles after the Launch Day ones are gone, but those may not be available to ship until closer to Christmas or even into early 2014.

Pre-order the PS4 Launch Day Watch Dogs bundle for $459 with free shipping at Amazon.com.

Pre-order the PS4 Launch Day Knackbundle for $459 with free shipping at Amazon.com.

Pre-order the PS4 Launch Day Battlefield 4 and PS Plus bundle for $499 with free shipping at Amazon.com.

Pre-order the PS4 Launch Day Killzone: Shadow Fall and PS Plus bundle for $499 with free shipping at Amazon.com.

Crash reveals PS4 HDD details and streaming?
You must be registered for see images

Within the first 10 minutes of the doors being opened at E3, a game had already crashed. That game was none other than the PS4 exclusive Knack. While being played at the Sony booth, the game crashed mid-game to reveal an interesting screen which you can see above.

HDD – Usable Space Closer to 400gb

The error screen had a lot going on, including an information box that revealed the current HDD space usage. If you look carefully the dev unit was using 385gb out of 423gb. When you factor in how manufacturers rate the drives you get actual usable space of 465gb. Now subtract that from what we saw on the crash screen and we get roughly 42gb of reserved system data that is not user accessible. That number could decrease or increase on actual retail systems.

What does all this mean? Well that’s simple, the actual usable HDD space on the PS4 system is a lot closer to 400gb than the 500gb HDD stat that you have seen in the past 24 hours. It’s likely that Microsoft’s Xbox One will also follow a similar path though, so this is not just Sony’s issue.

Are Demos Streamed?

An interesting question I’d say. I ask this question for a variety of reasons:

APP_HOME (DATA) and APP_HOME (HOST) text is visible, HOST suggesting some sort of networking is involved (usually streaming when dealing with a “host” system). This could just be referring to something else entirely though. Update: Hellcat just polietly informed us that APP_HOME (HOST) is “old stuff” and references the inter-connectivity between the console and the dev PC.
That streaming icon! The icon shows a screen receiving a wireless signal, most likely streaming a game (hence the player vs player icon within the screen)
The IP Address is listed within the information box (also generic information)
Mike Bendel, who was there with me, also mentioned he noticed some input lag on the Knack demo. I personally did not notice this, but then again I was more worried about surviving on hard mode than anything else.

E3 2013 | The highlights from Sony PlayStation at E3

Sony Wins Day 1 of E3 2013 by Giving Gamers What We Want
While Microsoft started the day out at their E3 2013 press conference by not addressing any of the controversies caused by their disastrous Xbox One reveal event three weeks ago, Sony ended Day 1 of E3 by addressing everyone’s fears and telling gamers exactly what they wanted to hear in some of the greatest E3 moments of all time.
One of the biggest reveals at the PlayStation 4 event was that we finally got to see what the next gen console actually looks like. Very similar to the Xbox One’s black minimalist style, but with a slanted design that can also be set upright, the PS4 looks to be noticeably smaller than the bulkier Xbox One.

Like Microsoft, Sony’s press conference overall was pretty good with new reveals like Destiny and The Order, plus new looks at titles previously revealed at their PlayStation 4 announcement event, such as Infamous: Second Son and Killzone: Shadow Fall.
However, it wasn’t the new games that had those in attendance going wild, and it was the jabs Sony took at Microsoft that had everyone in attendance going nuts. President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Jack Tretton, made it very clear that the PlayStation 4 won’t require a constant online connection, won’t have used game restrictions, and concluded their event by announcing that the system will be available this November for $399 ($100 cheaper than the less powerful Xbox One).
While neither the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 blew anybody away today like gamers had been dreaming about all last night, there’s no question that by not doing everything that people consider Microsoft evil for doing with the Xbox One AND by launching the PS4 at a starting price point so much cheaper, Sony was easily the winner of E3 for anybody who truly loves games and being able to play them without a big corporation’s constant restrictions.

E3’s Winner: Xbox vs. PlayStation
The Fast Money traders have the play on Restoration Hardware, Smith & Wesson and Boeing. And, a look at who's winning the console wars, with Michael Pachter, Wedbush analyst.
New gaming consoles unveiled at the industry's E3 event show one clear winner in the battle between Microsoft and Sony, Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities said Friday.

"I think actually, it's about the consoles because the software was really impressive," he said.

"Microsoft didn't do a very good job of explaining to consumers why they need to spend an extra $100 to get a camera and microphone array. Sony exploited that. They charged $100 less than Microsoft, so right now they're the winner."

Microsoft introduced a cloud-based Xbox One at this week's Electronic Entertainment Expo priced at $499. Meanwhile, Sony priced its new PlayStation 4 at $399.

(Read More: Sony PS4 Beats Microsoft's Xbox One—Pricewise)

PLAY VIDEO Julia Boorstin has all the details of the new Xbox One, which is designed to be an all-inclusive entertainment hub.
On CNBC's "Fast Money," Pachter said, "PlayStation won the first skirmish."

In response to a question whether Microsoft had shot itself in the foot by requiring an internet connection for its Xbox One, Pachter said, "Big time."

"Microsoft is trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist," he said, adding that gamers "don't want Big Brother looking over their shoulder and forcing them to log on. It really is complicated."

(Read More: Sony's PlayStation 4: Streaming, Social & Mobile)

The new PS4 also meant good news for retailer GameStop, Pachter added.

"I think that what really matters for GameStop is that both consoles are going to allow disk sales," he said. "They both have disk drives. They're both going to use physical media. And so, GameStop's going to be around until disks are eliminated."

Pachter also sounded positive on new game titles from Activision and Electronic Arts.

"I think it's going to be a fun year," he said.

PlayStation 4 Online Multiplayer Fee Will be Used to Fund Improvements
Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has promised that the surprise decision to charge for online multiplayer with PlayStation 4 is not a money-grabbing scheme and the money gained from it will be reinvested into the system to fund improvements.

When CVG asked him about the decision he replied, ”That’s [was] a big decision, what we internally discussed and decided is that we will continue the free access to online play on PS3 and Vita, so that’s clear. But because on PS4 the online connectivity features such as second screen, auto downloads and share features – these are one big pillar of the PS4 experience and we will continue to invest in this area to expand and improve these online features and services.

“If we keep giving away online access for free, the natural pressure is that we have to cut down on the cost to provide this free service. But that’s conflicting with our goal of being able to provide very robust and great online services going forward. So we decided that on PS4, because we want to continue to invest and improve our new services, we’ve asked the most engaged consumers in the online activities to share the burden with us so that we can continue to invest.”

It was revealed during Sony’s E3 press conference that players will require PlayStation Plus to access the online features of games on PlayStation 4 similar to Xbox Live’s Gold subscription, however it will only cost $5 and includes access to Plus on PlayStation 3 and Vita, as well as numerous bonuses.

“To make the pain a little bit less we will continue to offer free content with instant game collections, discounts and early access to betas on PS4 as well,” Yoshida added.

“So at the beginning we typically picked from older games for the instant game collection on Vita and PS3, but because everything is new on PS4 we decided to make a smaller version of Drive Club with all the online features open, included in that instant game collection on day one.

“In addition to that we add one digital game every month, so they get high quality indie games as well on top of what they get on PS3 and Vita. So hopefully that makes people’s decision easy to join PS Plus.”

SCE America VP of Publisher & Developer Relations Adam Boyes has confirmed to Joystiq that free-to-play games on PlayStation 4 will not require PlayStation Plus to play online, ”As far as free-to-play games are concerned, it’s the publisher’s decision whether they put it inside or outside of PS Plus.”

PlayStation 4 will launch this holiday season in Europe and North America priced at £349 / $399.

Sony: PS4 to get 2013 release in India
The PlayStation 4 will be releasing in India this year, Sony has confirmed.

PlayStation India country manager Atindriya Bose revealed this news during an interview with IVG. He said that the company is targeting a simultaneous launch in India alongisde other European countries, but a delay of up to a month might be caused due to logistical issues.

“It will be matched with the European launch; give or take a bit to account for Indian logistics. The consoles have to be shipped in advance and currently all consoles also require certification for the India market. In terms of targeting, we’re looking to synchronise with the European launch,” Bose said.

“That’s this year.” he pointed out.

When asked if the PS4 will be plagued by the same issues which the PS3 faced while coming to India, Bose reacted sharply.

“It’s unfair to compare the PS4 with PS3 because we have come a long way,” he said. “With PS3, first the world launches took place and then we started looking at the other markets we wanted to go into. For PS4, it will have a timeline that is more aligned with what we had on PS Vita. Being a portable, the logistics had made it easier for us to launch day-and-date [with Europe]. Once we know the European date for PS4, we will work towards that, but there will be some gap, depending on the logistics.”

Bose also assured that the Indian launch for the PS4 will be late by “One month at most, unless there is an issue at the certification level.”

This suggests that a global PS4 launch is on the cards and a 2013 release date for other Asian countries such as Japan is also likely.

Twitch TV Streaming Enabled For PS4? War Thunder Update Hints at This Possibility
You must be registered for see images

War Thunder, a next generation MMO combat game developed by Gaijin Entertainment, now enables live broadcasting to Twitch. At the touch of a button, War Thunder players can now stream directly to their Twitch channel. For optimum presentation, they can customize the quality and resolution of the stream up to Full HD.

War Thunder’s recent global update 1.31 featured highly anticipated social components including Twitch and Facebook functionality alongside new planes, maps and numerous improvements to the gameplay. Beginning today, every War Thunder virtual pilot can easily align their Twitch channel to their War Thunder account, as well as customizing the broadcast quality and enabling commentary during broadcasts, so they can live stream instantly at the click of a button.

War Thunder is also coming to the PS4 console exclusively at the moment, alongside the PC and iOS and the obvious question now is whether or not PS4 users will also be able to stream their gameplay to Twitch TV? This latest update does not specifically point out that Twitch is not coming to the PS4. While Sony has been seriously pushing UStream as their aligned streaming connection for the PS4, no official word has been announced concerning Twitch TV on the Sony platform.

Where does E3 2013 rank for you in terms of impact?

It's amazing. I've been with PlayStation since the very beginning of the project in 1993 and some people reminded me of the way the passion and the vibe in the press conference was like the very first E3 in 1995, when we introduced the original PlayStation. Steve Race, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America at the time, just walked up onto the stage and said "$299" for the price, and the audience went crazy. And I agree – I remember that energy and excitement. We are so excited that all the plans we worked on leading up to this year are coming together. We feel like what we have designed and aimed for are really connecting with people, and that's great.

How did it feel being up there showing off the games that are developed by SCE Worldwide Studios to the world?

You must be registered for see images

I was proud to be a part of this very important press conference. When we started planning for E3, honestly I thought there were people who would present better as the show was to be done in English. But when I spoke with the SCEA PR team, they said, "You have to do it. People want to hear from you as the head of Worldwide Studios." Everyone is working so hard to get PS4 into the market that I felt enormous responsibility to show the best of what people are doing from the software standpoint. I wanted to get that message across.

What kind of feedback do you get from the development teams about working with PlayStation 4?

I don't have to ask for this feedback, they just tell me. They are so happy that they can just focus on the games. They don't have to spend so much time trying to understand the hardware. The progress that all teams have made is great. That's a consistent message that I get. Many of the team members of the studios were already involved in the discussion of what PS4 should be, what DUALSHOCK 4 should be in terms of improvement from DUALSHOCK 3.

You must be registered for see images

I get the feeling when I talk to the teams that there's a real sense of pride that they are now using the system they helped to design. They have a genuine passion for showing why PS4 is so special for playing games on. We can show the best of PS4 through our games.

With PlayStation Vita there's a sense of immediacy; you can put a game down and come back to it later on...

It's the same philosophy with PS4. We all love this immediacy and the seamless experience, and in many ways PS Vita is the inspiration for many of the features that we have incorporated into the PS4 system software designs. Actually, because it is the same group of people involved in designing PS Vita and PS4, PS Vita was almost like preliminary work and PS4 is the continuation of that. It's an evolution of the thinking of a home console, especially on the networked services side. So yes, we like the immediacy, and the expectation of the gamer is that all devices should be like that. We are working hard to achieve that.

Why is it so important to support independent game developers?

Because independent developers are making great, awesome games! Their passion, creativity and energy are at an all-time high. We expect that to continue, the reason being many indie studios are not brand new to the industry; they are often very experienced and have worked on many, many games over a number of years at larger studios. And they might think, "I want to make this game, this idea, for me," but it can be difficult to achieve within a larger team.

Because of the advances in digital platforms, now it's possible for small teams to create games and make a success of them all over the world. That's where the energy and some of the most exciting experiments and concepts are. Some of the best examples are last year's award winners, Journey and The Walking Dead. Both were digitally distributed and were made by small development teams. They competed with games with the biggest production values and they won. It's so important for us to be supportive of that on PS4, PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.

That creativity you talk about must then feed back into the teams under the SCE Worldwide Studios umbrella?

Absolutely. We have larger teams and we also work with external developers and producers who cultivate close links with the smaller teams. When they see something amazing that is being developed, that inspires our teams as well. Larger teams sometimes find it better to stick with proven themes, but once a smaller developer shows something can be done, that really fires the other teams up – they want to outdo them.

Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida Confirms that PS Vita Remote Play of PS4 Games Will Work Through the Internet

Sony on Vita: "it's a PS4 in your pocket. Gamers will tell us how it'll evolve by how they use it"
Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Fergal Gara has been explaining more about the relationship between PS4 and PS Vita. Specifically he's detailed how the, "video coder chip inside PS4 is a low-overhead facility" that means he expects, "the vast majority of PS4 games [will be] quickly and easily enabled for PS Vita".

Fergal Gara on PS Vita: "it's a PS4 in your pocket"
We asked Gara if the decision to bind the two consoles together with the announcement of mandatory Remote Play was a decision that was best for PS4 or PS Vita? As far as he's concerned, "It's best for both". His reasoning being the small amount of effort involved. "In short, there's a video coder chip inside PS4 that enables a variety of features. It enables live broadcast of your gameplay without putting any overhead on the CPU and the GPU combo, so it's not dragging down the game performance in any way, shape or form. But it also allows you - and it is Gaikai enabled technology - allows you to pick up the Vita and go away with a full suite of controls and play your PS4 game over WiFi".

"Clearly Vita more seamlessly integrates
with PS4 than it does with PS3"

As Gara puts it, "it's a low-overhead facility you can enable quickly and easily" and as a result is a function he thinks, "puts PlayStation Vita into a new light". Because of this tech and the ease of use with which developers can leverage the power Gara says it, "helps to explain its design concept and why it was developed". He partially hints at the idea that the PS4/Vita binding was the plan along, adding, "clearly it more seamlessly integrates with PS4 than it does with PS3".

For Gara Remote Play, "changes the story". With the PlayStation 3 the message was that, "PS Vita was a PS3 in your pocket", and while he admits there was, "a certain amount of truth in that," it was more down to, "the graphical resolution and the power of the experience," of the Vita. Now, the idea that it's a PS4 in your pocket Gara says is, "a far more literal and correct terminology because you can play what we expect to be the vast majority of PS4 games quickly and easily enabled for PS Vita".

One potential issue that raises is what will happen to the Vita if it increasingly becomes seen as a remote terminal for the PS4, rather than a console in it's own right? Gara admits that's a "good question" but states, "Certainly for the foreseeable [future] we intend to continue developing - our publishing partners will continue to develop - Vita experiences that are standalone". However, what could happen is by no means fixed. "How will that evolve? I don't know", says Gara. "I think gamers will tell us how that will evolve [by] how they use the device in the future". That said, he does go on to raise one obvious point: "What I would say is one thing you will not be able to do with your PS4 games, clearly, is play offline. So, you know, if you're on a train, offline, what are you going to play on? So there isn't today a mechanic, other than a dedicated PS Vita game, to play games in that environment".

Sony's PlayStation 4 Is Running Modified FreeBSD 9
The operating system at the heart of Sony's PlayStation 4 is FreeBSD 9.0.

It's been exposed that the operating system powering the PlayStation 4 is Orbis OS, which is a Sony spin of FreeBSD 9.0. It's not a huge surprise FreeBSD is being used over Linux, in part due to the more liberal licensing. The PlayStation 4 is x86_64 based now rather than Cell-based, which makes it easier to use FreeBSD.

It's a bit of a surprise to see FreeBSD being used though when at the heart of the Sony PS4 is an AMD eight-core APU with Radeon graphics. There isn't a Catalyst driver available for any BSD operating system right now and the open-source driver ported from Linux with Radeon KMS and Gallium3D is still in a primitive state. Thus, Sony in cooperation with AMD must have developed their own graphics driver for the PlayStation 4 with FreeBSD or at least ported the Catalyst code-base to BSD.

The information of FreeBSD 9.0 powering the PlayStation 4 was shared at VGLeaks.com and based upon a second-gen development kit for the forthcoming console.

PS4 & Xbox One vs indies: the studios speak – part one
Gaijin Games, Introversion, Hello Games and Brian Provinciano discuss Sony’s approach to the PS4 indie scene with VG247′s Dave Cook. Get an insight into next-gen independence here.

Since Sony unveiled PlayStation 4 back in February the company has made it abundantly clear that it fully supports the indie development scene.

The rising cost of triple-a development is like quicksand slowly ascending to the necks of platform holders and their publishers, and it’s clear the market simply cannot continue down this path alone if it hopes to remain sustainable.

An open-door approach to low-risk, high return projects is the smartest move Sony could have made going into the next generation, although it seems to be a road Microsoft doesn’t want to take. Its focus now lies elsewhere.

Pat recently summed up Xbox One’s indie blockade in a recent post, and in the article he highlighted one particularly foolish move that could prove fatal to Microsoft down the line.

Namely, Microsoft demands that all developers hoping to release games on Xbox formats do so through publishers first. This is non-negotiable and it can only serve to push indie studios to Steam and PS4, where there is less red tape, a greater share of profits, and less spend required to bring a game to market.

From the outside looking in, PS4 clearly appears to be the console format of choice for small studios. To get an insider’s view on Sony’s indie strategy so far, I decided to speak with a group of prominent independent developers that are enjoying considerable success today.

What do indies actually need from platform holders?
Rather than kick off with what developers hope to see from Sony down the line, I asked my interviewees what they actually need in order for both PS4 and Xbox One publishing to make sense.

It became clear pretty quickly that at present, Sony and Microsoft are guilty of making studios jump through unnecessary hoops and signing redundant paperwork on current-gen formats. While filling out forms and examining clauses might be a cakewalk for large developers with an in-house legal team, it’s incredibly taxing to a one-coder studio.

Retro City Rampage developer Brian Provinciano told me that while the Steam and Xbox 360 versions of his debut game are identical, the certification channels on both platforms represented a canyon of difference. “In the past, most games were developed by sizeable studios and brought to market by a sizeable publisher,” he began.

Sony and Nintendo have taken notice and are actively streamlining their processes and policies to make everything easier. I think it’s only a matter of time before Microsoft does as well. They really have to.
“The platforms were set up to work hand in hand with this structure. Today, mass market games can be done from start to finish with just one or two developers, so the old structure was a burden to many. With that structure, when one person handles all of the business, production, finance and marketing, they end up having to fill out four times the paperwork themselves and are left with very little sleep and even less time to work on the game itself.

“Steam demonstrates the new way of doing things perfectly. In three man days of work, everything from the initial discussions to signing the contract, programming leaderboard and achievement code and authoring store banners and assets were done, and the game was ready to be in players’ hands.

“On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Xbox version took over a year of time just on the business side and who knows how many man months of head-down work. In the end, the Steam version is 100% feature identical to the XBLA version, even supporting Xbox 360 controllers. It demonstrates what’s possible and what every platform must strive for moving forward in the new age of digital distribution and smaller studios.”

Provinciano added that he has experience of both Sony and Nintendo taking steps to streamline this process to make everything easier, but he did stress that he believes Microsoft will follow suit in time, and added, “They really have to. They’re the only one left which is not set up to support self-publishing.”

Gaijin Games co-founders Mike Roush & Alex Neuse – of Runner2 fame – came back with a similar response to Provinciano, but repeatedly stressed that when it comes to the indie approach, no one comes close to Valve. In a joint response they said, “What the big boys need to realize is that so-called ‘indies’ don’t have a whole lot of money or time to deal with the often bloated business requirements and absurd technical requirements that are imposed upon them.

“They need to start turning stuff around faster and have it cost much less. For instance, on certain platforms our most recent release, Runner2, was completely done for over a month before it was churned through the first party machines and brought to market. Delays like that can positively ruin some smaller developers.

“And once the game has been released, it’s becoming increasingly more difficult for consumers to find the products that we all know they want to play. Of course, if you’re one of the giant developers who can afford to pay for prime placement up front and center, great. But those opportunities aren’t always realistic for smaller developers.

“If the big three actually want to woo indies, they need to start accepting the fact that most indies aren’t huge business conglomerates that A: understand or B: have the time to play their reindeer games. If they don’t, all indies will just stop trying and will decide to do business solely with Valve”.

As a counter-argument it could be suggested that quality will always rise to the top, and that well-received games like Runner2 will sell regardless of where they are placed. Perhaps this is true in some cases – hello Minecraft – but by and large it really does seem to matter where a game ends up. Again, rather than simply assume this to be true, I asked each of the developers how much placement has meant to them over the years.

Giving indies a boost
But first, the importance of placement was underlined brilliantly in a telling blog post by Waking Mars developer Tiger Style in May of last year. The studio posted lifetime iOS sale stats for its games Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor and Waking Mars, and the graphs for both titles represents a sheer cliff face after just a few weeks on sale, with spikes whenever the game is featured or on sale.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this from an indie studio either, I’ve seen it often, so there is a clear trend at play. With so many games launching digitally each month it’s clear that platformer holders will ultimately have to pick and choose to feature those that best sell the format, or games by studios willing to secure visibility through other means – be it a publisher deal or cold, hard cash. But is that right? No, not necessarily.

“To us, the next generation is about quality, not quantity. You could take a game you’ve built in Unity and hit export for PS4, and that’s great. But just imagine what more you can do. It’s not just another platform to ship on, it’s a huge opportunity.
Don’t forget; as Sony lowers its barriers to publishing on PS4, the volume of indie games appearing on the format will rise, potentially having an adverse effect on a game’s store visibility. With that in mind, might indie success on PS4 and Xbox One be dictated largely by placement and sales in the next-generation, or will quality continue to shine through a sea of submissions each week?

Sean Murray of Joe Danger developer Hello Games described his brush with next-gen formats so far, and his view on the ‘quality versus quantity’ issue. “When we got next-generation dev kits, we had our hands on something that no one has seen before. With that hardware sitting in our studio, smelling new and looking shiny, what would you do?

“Sure, we could have started to make Joe Danger 3, and maybe that’s the best business decision. But you don’t need a next-gen console to play the best Joe Danger game we can possibly make. We wanted to do something new, something really ambitious, that really uses the hardware. We wanted to make something that’s defining for us.

“To us, the next generation is about quality, not quantity. You could take a game you’ve built in Unity and hit export for PS4, and that’s great. But just imagine what more you can do. It’s not just another platform to ship on, it’s a huge opportunity. We see next-gen as a massive, brilliant challenge.

“The codename is Project Skyscraper and it’s giving us a real buzz. It’s like going back to the early days of the studio, when it was the four of us doing completely new things. We’ve got empty folders and blank documents, and we’re staying up until 2 am coding – this is what everyone gets into games to do.”

Sean’s last point is interesting. An indie developer can be anyone; it could be you or I, a person who has broken off from the corporate, triple-A market, or even a graduate fresh from four years of learning how to code. These people go solo or start small teams in an attempt to realise their dreams and it’s soul-destroying to see many of them beaten down by the very arena they tried to flee in the first place.

Unless you side solely with Steam it seems.

Either way it’s a complex issue, and one we’ll conclude in part two of this article tomorrow, in which Mark Morris of Introversion recalls his rough time with Microsoft, Gaijin discusses future challenges facing indies and we weigh up Sony’s efforts to democratise the development process in PS4 It’s about to get heated.

Sony: PS3 Games Streaming Via Cloud in 2014 for US Only, No Timeline for Europe, PS4 Games Later
The ability to stream games via the cloud is going to be an important selling point for PS4, but when can gamers expect to enjoy it? According to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President Jim Ryan it really depends on where they live and what they want to stream, as he shared during an interview by Gamereactor.

It’s gonna be pretty much a phased approach, and it’s gonna be phased in terms of geography and in terms of how we’ll do it. We’ll launch in North America in 2014. We are working to bring that service to other parts of the world, and most notably Europe, but you know, Europe is… I love Europe… It’s a great place to live and it’s so different… You know, Scandinavia is different to Italy, to France and everything is different to the UK, but that difference makes it great to live there, but it makes it rather difficult to do stuff like introducing a cloud gaming service, because it’s just very fragmented. So there’s a lot of details to work through, and we are in the the process of doing that, but we don’t have a timeline for introduction outside North America.

We will start with the streaming of PS3 games to both PS3 and PS4, and that will quickly be followed by PlayStation Vita as a client device.

Ryan also specified that streaming PS4 content is not off the menu, but won’t come immediately.

That’s also on the roadmap, but we’ll start with PS3 and then quickly it’ll migrate to content from other platforms.

Unfortunately European gamers will get the shaft, at least for a while. We can’t really blame Sony for the large variety of details, regulations and caveats imposed by the colorful landscape of European governments and their respective legislation, but it’s still sad to see that things never really seem to go our way.

Sony to announce more PS4 games at Gamescom
Gamescom is an European equivalent of E3 and Sony has always treated it with equal respect. Plenty of new games for PS3 were revealed at the event and it looks like the same thing will happen for the PS4.

Sony revealed a new IP The Order 1886 and we’ve been wondering what their other first-party studios like Guerrilla Games, Naughty Dog, Media Molecule etc. are doing. Well, it looks like we will finally know the answer to that at Gamescom.

SCEE’s Jim Ryan said in an interview that the company will be announcing more games for PS4 at the show. He also confirmed that the PS4 will be launching in Europe before Christmas 2013.

“30 new PS4 first-party games are in development and 12 of them are new IP’s,” he said. “There’s a lot going on, we need to keep stuff back. There’s Gamescom and we need to have something to show at Gamescom, don’t we?”

This is great news as there have been plenty of rumours that Sony is going all out when it comes to internal software support for the PS4 and hopefully we will see terrific games at the show.

Re: The Official Playstation 4 Console & Game Exclusives Discussion & News Thread

After reading everything there is about both consoles I've mor or less made up my mind.I have always been an Xbox gamer but after E3,I don't know. The exclusives and the change in controller for the ps4 are what attracts me.Lets face it,the ps3 controller is horrible. However the one for the ps4 is so different and even includes a touch pad which some might say is gimmicky.I guess now we just wait for Gamescon.

PS 4 Release Date Rumored to Leak Ahead of the Xbox One
The competition between Sony and Microsoft with their PS 4 and Xbox One consoles respectively is yet a hot happening. An early launch of the PlayStation 4 could well be expected as a fall out of this competition to get customers latched on to their device before the other does the same.

A retail partner of Sony covering the European region, NeoGaf have let out the probable early release strategy from Sony by posting a poster of the PlayStation 4 which had the early release date mentioned on it. Sony had forbidden the display of this poster by all its retailers.

As per the poster, release date of the PlayStation 4 has been mentioned as 13 November. The Xbox is to be released on the 27th of November. That gives Sony, if the release date is to be believed, a full two weeks of head start before the Xbox.

The game is not yet over as neither Sony, nor Microsoft has come up with any official release date announcements as yet. Microsoft has the precedence of effecting last minute change like it did with the policy on usage of used games as well as the need for continuous internet connection on their consoles. Likewise, an earlier than the expected November 27 release date cannot be ruled out either.

The retailer who gave out the food for this fight has also not confirmed anything. What can however be concluded safely is that in the US, the PS4 would have either an early or a late release.

Ardent gamers would sure be keeping their eyes and ear open and up to get more information for they are the first burst of customers who make a difference in the sales of the gadgets and gives importance to the launch timing of the device.

PS4 PlayStation Plus kicks off with these FREE games
Sony recently celebrated one year of PlayStation Plus. A whopping 64 free games are currently in your PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection if you signed up at the start which would give you games for a value of approximately $1855. In addition Free-To-Play games will not require PlayStation Plus.

For less than $5 you will get these features on PS Plus:

• Discounted games
• Cloud saves
• Automatic game updates
• Early access to betas
• Instant game collection
• Online multiplayer

PS Plus shows no sign of stopping and these games will kick off the service on PS4 in the first 12 months:

Outlast

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an inside source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line being science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Driveclub

Driveclub is a next generation, socially connected racing game that captures the heart and soul of car culture and the passion it creates. Driveclub is a game to play in real clubs. It’s about friendships and rivalries and team-based racing, together in the world’s best supercars on the world’s most breath-taking roads – all rendered in cutting edge next generation graphics.

Don’t Starve

You play as Wilson, an intrepid Gentleman Scientist who has been trapped by a demon and transported to a mysterious wilderness world. Living in a randomly generated world, Wilson must learn to exploit his environment and its inhabitants if he ever hopes to escape.

Secret Ponchos

Secret Ponchos is a Western shooter by Switchblade Monkeys. The premise of the game is “What’s Your Head Worth?”. Players create an outlaw (a persistent character) and enter the town of Lonetree – where they instantly have a bounty on their head. Players then engage in battle against others, battles where one will stand and one will fall.

PS4 Available for Preorder in Mexico for $200 Less than Xbox One
Mexico (pretty much like most of Latin America) is famous for its extremely high prices for consoles and videogames. To give you an idea a PS3 there still costs 4,559.20 Pesos, which converts to about $352.

Likewise, the Xbox One is available for preorder at the popular consumer electronics retailer Liverpool for 8,499 Pesos, that convert to about $655. Everyone was expecting to see the PS4 made available for a similarily high price, but that isn’t the case. At the same retailer the upcoming console from Sony is now available for preorder for 5,839.20 Pesos, about $450.

That’s $200 less than the rival console from Microsoft, and only $50 more than the price in the US, which is also unprecedented. We don’t know exactly the reason for the difference, but that’s definitely an example of aggressive pricing. We’ll have to see if the rest of Latin America and other retailers in Mexico will follow the example, but for now Sony might hit the ground running and get to start with a sizable lead in the country.

PS4: release date of the next gen console seems to Gamescom 2013
As the site of Gamefront reports, the release date of the PS4 will be released at Gamescom 2013. The information allegedly from Sony circles close. An official statement from Sony for the release date of the Playstation 4 (PS4), there is not currently.

The release date of the upcoming PS4 to be announced at Gamescom 2013. This is evident from a report by the website Gamefront. So far it is not known whether the information is true and correct. Gamefront called "sources close to Sony", but it is not clear from the report where the information comes. However, it is quite conceivable that Sony 4 (PS4) revealed the release date of the Playstation at the event.

Officially is still no opinion of the appearance of the Sony Playstation fourth Only "Holyday 2013," has been called as release date at E3. Even when the Xbox one will be on the shelves of video game retailers, is not yet known. We will keep you on course, our extensive PS4 Topic to date.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the release date for November was just marketing to give a rough date for when it will be released.

PS4/Xbox One Could Make for CGI Graphics in Future – Enlighten Creator
It has long been debated whether video games will be able to do render CGI in-game graphics. Now with the advent of next generation consoles, will the PS4 and Xbox One bring post-production processes on par with films, as multiple stacked layers and local dynamic control will be available for each pass to enhance visuals?

“For us, this is an area of active research and it is a bit too early to start going into great detail,” says Chris Doran, founder and COO of Geomerics, the company behind Enlighten.

He then recalls his meeting with Pixar’s lead artist to take his suggestion on how they can improve lighting in video games.

“But the overall picture is quite simple. About 5 years ago we sat down with the lead lighting artist at Pixar and asked him to critique some screenshots from games. His first comment was that the global illumination needed improving. His second comment was that the images would be improved in film by better compositing of the frame. We’ve spent the last 5 years sorting out his first problem, and are starting to think about the second, as are a number of studios.”

He then talks about how CGI is implemented in movies and how developers have the freedom to inject artist’s input at will. At the moment compositing is a difficult task in video games, but he remains hopeful that they will be able do this on next generation consoles.

“In a film CGI setting, many aspects of the final image would be computed separately: the direct lighting; the indirect lighting; an AO pass; volumetric effects; motion blur … Each of these would be a separate layer, and an artist would composite these together using advanced tools to achieve the final image. We would like to achieve something similar in games, but we don’t have the freedom to inject an artist’s input as you move round your world. This makes better compositing more challenging in games, but I am confident we will see some major improvements on the new hardware,” he added.

It remains to be seen whether we will see CGI level graphics or even something closer on next generation consoles. But one thing is for sure, there is a lot hype and hoopla for PS4/Xbox One in the developer and gaming community alike.
