I respect Mikoto and Fugaku for how they went out, however, I respect them very little for how they acted beforehand. Fugaku noticed his son wasn't following the clan's way of thinking but stated that he couldn't ever understand Itachi and gave up on him...instead of attempting to see why Itachi thought that way after Itachi said what he did in front of him and those 3 cops. Mikoto stood by and did nothing as well. They put the clan before their own children. Also, the idea of a coup was a horrendous idea. By calculations done after the numbers were revealed in the manga for the war arc armies, an estimated 14,000 people live in Konoha. How would a clan of more than likely less than 200 people defeat that? Hiruzen was also the most lenient hokage. I don't think it would have killed Fugaku to stop being so pretentious for once and go to talk to him. Fugaku was actually in a better position to pay Hiruzen a visit than vice-versa, considering that in the anime it stated that the Uchiha compound was still a part of the village but still a separate entity because they were priviledged with a slight form of self-government, and therefore Hiruzen was in no position to give definite orders to them regarding the situation.
I also don't like some of the things Fugaku said to Itachi right before he went out. I liked : "I'm still proud of you." But that was all.
I didn't like, "Don't worry. Our pain will be over in an instant, unlike yours."-I understand this was to take away Itachi's guilt, because Itachi did want to pay for his crime. But I just don't like the way he put it for some reason. I also didn't like "I still don't understand your philosophy". -Nothing really wrong here, it just felt a little out of place. But then again, it shows Fugaku's maturity, because he's placing his son's way of thinking over his for once. But then again (yes, again xD ), he may have actually not fought back because he and Mikoto knew that everyone besides them was dead, so in effect it would be pointless to continue living considering their plans for the Uchiha to overthrow the hokage and take Konoha failed. It's evident that they knew everyone was dead, considering that they were sitting in that room, in that position, before Itachi entered and after Itachi came in, they knew it was him without even turning around to face and look at him. If the clan was still alive and they knew that, they probably would have fought Itachi and he would have been thrown in prison or executed...mainly because he wouldn't fight his parents if they tried to fight back. He broke down and started crying, and almost didn't kill them when Fugaku even gave him permission and pushed him on. If it was that hard...if they resisted than Itachi wouldn't lay a hand on them more than likely.
