I just remembered that when Tobi first confronted Nagato and co., Yahiko instantly realized that it was impossible for him to be Madara and actually laughed at the idea that someone would be so stupid as to pose as Madara:

So.... what makes Yahiko so special? Why was he able to sniff out the fake when so many other top shinobi could not? I mean we are talking about people like Jiraiya, Minato, Itachi, all the current Kage and many more. Why is it that they were not able to see through the rouse when a kid from an isolated village cut-off from the outside world could?

Personally, I don't want to use plot as an excuse because although this conveniently happened right after Tobi being revealed, it still does not explain why someone like Yahiko could figure this out when a slew of top shinobi, most notably Itachi, could not. I just feel that some of Kishi's antics in regard to establishing credit for Tobi being Madara through character testimony was more about fooling us rather than doing his characters proper justice.

Edit: Honestly the only explanation I can come up with is that Tobi simply grew on the others, like Itachi and the Kages, and was eventually able to convince them that Madara was the only one he possibly could be. I mean it is much easier to call your enemy by a name rather than calling them.... 'someone we don't actually know.' That is truly all I can come up with, the fact that Yahiko did not have time to be fooled like they were.

Thoughts, comments, concerns, ideas?

I think part of it was Yahiko's brovado personality, but other than that he may have been a keen observer...though Hanzo still pulled one over him :hint:

The knowledge of how old Madara would have been in addition to the confident personality Yahiko had is the only conclusion I can come up with.

Nice find sir.

I suppose Yahiko's deduction skills were beyond legendary. Dang! Look at that confidence! He was so cool! No wonder he was the first leader of the Akatsuki!

I think Yahiko was intelligent enough to simply see thru Obito's actions in this instance, I mean if you were Yahiko wouldn't it seem strange that someone that supposedly died many many years ago just appears in front of you? The only logical thing to think is that someone is simply using his name without knowing the story behind what happened of course, well that's what I would think any way. I do not think there was anything overly special about Yahiko.

Nagato was easily swayed early on by a combination of Obito's manipulation, his own curiosity in his eyes & what they mean and some of the things told to him about the Sage of Six Paths/Rinnegan in the past, which Obito used to his advantage.

Nothing. I say it's simply due to lack of knowledge and little time by Obito's side. He has no reason to believe it's Madara unlike Itachi.

i'm pretty sure Yahiko wouldn't have been the original leader of the Akatsuki if he was nothing but "a shit" and "not special"

Yahiko did not know who Tobi was. He felt as if this masked person was up to no good given the way he presented himself. Yahiko felt this masked man would try to manipulate "those who awaken the rinnegan".

edit: proof is when Yahiko died. He wasn't able to dissuade Nagato from joining up with Tobi any longer.

2nd edit: Based on what Yahiko knew, he instantly decided that it would be impossible for that masked man to be Madara. Itachi was skeptical, he entertained the idea that it could be Madara and it could not be Madara.
