To preserve chakra maybe. He wasn't in battle at that time so I don't see a reason for him to keep it open.

If that was the case then why not just turn it off? He kept his other Sharingan eye on and open. Kakashi closing his eye to preserve chakra makes senses because he wasn't an Uchiha so lacked the ability to turn the Sharingan off but Sasuke is an Uchiha and it's his actual eye and we see Madara switch freely between his Sharingan and Rinnegan.

Two possible reasons why he can't that I've came with are: 1) He's not a path of the Sage like Madara which he might have to be to turn on and off his Rinnegan (He got Hashirama's cells long after Hashirama had Ashura's transmigration while the Sage said Madara got it before it was over) or 2) he needed to rest the eye from overusing it just like how Kakashi would do with Kamui, Itachi with Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu, and Sasuke with Amaterasu/Enton.

Why would we open it if he wasn't in battle? When have we ever seen Sasuke activate his MS or better yet his Susanoo just to have a conversation with somebody? Simple, because it uses up chakra.

Why would he close his eye instead of turning it off which is what Sasuke use to do when not fighting or at least revert it by to the 3 Tomoes until he needs the Rinnegan unless he can't turn it off or if he turn it off he can't reactivate it. Sasuke have closed his eye when he overused it just like Itachi and Kakashi had when they used their MS jutsu. Sasuke was the one who told them not to let their guard down so why close the eye instead making his left eye the 3 tomoes Sharingan as he has in the pass? He either can't even though it's his own eye (making him like Kakashi) or it's because he needed to rest the eye.

After today's chapter some people thought Sasuke's technique required start-up time because of this scan, which is actually incorrect:

During the fight with Madara, Sasuke used his teleportation back to back roughly 1-4 times. Though he didn't spam it, he still used it a significant amount of times to show he could use it whenever necessary.

To conclude, if Sasuke's technique required start-up or needs to be charged it would mean he couldn't use it back to back as effectively as he did against Madara.

Well Obito said he sensed Sasuke build up the chakra in his eye, Sasuke have to build chakra into his eyes to use eye jutsus; that's how it works. He wasn't using his S/T jutsu right after the other, this will give him time to build up any needed chakra so this "start-up" people talking about might be that, He was given Senjutsu from the Sage so he does have a good amount of chakra and it's not like how Itachi with low stamina had to close his eye to build up the chakra for either Tsukuyomi or Amaterasu.
