One never need a Rinnegan as IT still can be projected onto moon surface using God Tree that not involving Rinnegan at all.

The rinnesharingan madara had was simply kaguya's rinnesharingan at the top of the shinju,which he simply brought out after absorbing the tree.

if madara had time to train his rinnegan he'd probably be able to do the same things as well
