Now, it's my opinion that Hiruzen was retconned and was originally supposed to be the strongest Hokage. Kabuto said he was the strongest Kage and that people referred to him as "The Professor" because he had mastered just about all, if not all, techniques in the Leaf. When the series kept going on and on and Kishi was needing bigger and badder villains, all of a sudden Hashirama and Madara became pseudo-deities even though in part 1 they fought on par with an old Hiruzen. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember anyone saying part 1 edo tensei was incomplete.
Even though we know for a fact that Hiruzen could never solo Hashirama or Madara, it's debatable for Tobirama since we don't have much to compare the two by. But if Hiruzen was the professor who mastered the techniques of the Leaf, and the eight inner gates was a technique of the Leaf, is there any reason that Hiruzen wouldn't be able to master the eight gates as well? And if he had, could that have possibly made him as strong as he was as hyped to be?
