Im still not sure Hiruzen was retconned. His hype was directed to him in his prime which is a form of him we never got to see, except in one flashback where he was stated to be stronger than tobirama and he was still only a teenager.

Hiruzen was undoubtedly a monster in his youth, which has been hinted to strongly in the manga. Mastering all 5 elements and every justu that existed in the hidden leaf. He outclased Tobirama and became hokage as a teenager. He personally trained the legendary sannin. At his old age his chakra was still as powerful as orchimaru and tobirama. And best of all Hiruzen had MONKEY KING ENMA!!!!

Hiruzen as a shinobi was extremely OP. In a time before Kishi started handing out powerups like halloween candy, Hiruzen was the only one with the skill and power to master all the elemental natures... Im talking pre-shippuden and before Kishi decided Naruto should be Jesus Christ... As a shinobi Hiruzen stomps... As a War Arc DBZ God, not so much
