Most people seem to prefer the manga and they cite that the reasons are: the anime is too slow and the animation is ugly.
In my experience, I started out with the anime in early 2013 and then I watched up until the Skypiea Arc and then read the big arcs to catch up faster and when I caught up, the anime was at the Punk Hazard Arc.
Reading the manga was amazing, however, when my friends and family were curious about One Piece, I re-watched the entire series (right now in PH) with some of them by watching a couple of episodes per day. The anime is fantastic IMO and the slow pacing is fine for the adventure feel. Yes, some arcs are way too long and some episodes are not necessary but you can watch at you discretion and still not miss out on the major events.
The animation and quality got a lot better as well:

In conclusion, the anime is underrated and if you ever want to show people One Piece, I think the anime is better than the manga to introduce people as most are foreign to the concept of reading black and white pictures for fun and it doesn't really interest them. Animation brings the drawings to life and gives it such a great adventure feeling. So, just have patience and sit back and enjoy the anime you will not regret watching so many episodes and you don't have to worry about catching up, it's not a race.
