It's easier when you have a ready made verse and even a set of ready characters - you only need a plot to fit people in. A lot of fanfiction writers do well enough as long as they are not trying to create everything from scratch including catching the readers' attention. More talented ones are able to create and add good original characters or even better ones than the original story of course. Will depend on their range how far and how many they can come up and how interesting and lasting they can make them.
Still I cannot break a feeling whether I should consider it the continuation of the manga only or something between a manga and a doujinshi.

I guess my biggest concern would be towards the feel for already made characters, and the 'feel' for the Manga. We've generally followed Naruto through Kishimoto's hand, basically. A lot of us are accustomed to a certain way of Naruto. Already we have complaints of the art style, which to me isn't totally wrong. Some of the characters, like Sarada in example, are wearing clothes that don't match their personality. She's strong willed, and has a temper. Why would she leave combat ready clothes for lose fitting skirts and high heels? They better not put fan service .... This is a thing that Kishimoto rarely does, occasionally at best.
Another thing is the feel for the story. People will tend to hate and ignore this series if it interrupts with their interpretation of characters, relationships, etc.,
I think this might just you and me on this one Indra haha, considering the great, concise arcs Boruto and Sarada have already been through. Far more mature and advanced than Part 1 Naruto/Sakura Kishi stuff. It's Boruto and Gaiden's pacing that might be an issue though.
My immediate disconnect is the time period they've gone for. I'm not interested in seeing more of it because I genuinely wonder what else there is to do here.
The arcs weren't terrible at all, I mean some of the underlying stories had rough patches here and there, but since most of the family plot is thrown out of the window, bar the upcoming Mitsuki One Shot which probably will do with his character and father, we should be seeing some good development in the upcoming new series.
In my opinion, it does have potential. The art is throwing everyone off but my gut is telling me that we will enjoy it, somewhat. But the possibility of this really sucking is high too. The Boruto Movie Novel was worse than the Movie when it came to explanations of the Movie itself.
The only plus side to the Novel was the fact that the author enjoyed Boruto's character as much as I did, meaning that he should have a grasp of his character in the next generation series. So I'm interested in what he will go from there.
Some of the fan fictions, even though well written on their own, make too many characters OOC and/or write AU stories... and in the case it's better they simply tag it AU and not claim it as continuing with canon. And thus avoid being targeted by cannon Nazis.
