Naruto PURPOSELY failed his Rasengan and planned to have Chakra stolen.
Naruto's finally accomplished a one handed rasengan in his base/exhausted form which was a first if I can recall correctly BUT completely failed in typical Narutostyle. Or did he...?
Now we all know Naruto isn't fighting to kill Sasuke, his ninja way is to bring him back blah blah blah, but if you look over these panels another time in order, you see that Sasuke was fully ready to clash with Naruto, but all of a sudden, his chidori failed him.
Naruto's rasengan can be fatal, and again Naruto isn't trying to kill Sasuke.
I'm calling it: Naruto knows the only way to release IT (upon his own accord albeit) is for their seals to clash. Sasuke's seal on his dominant chidori hand (left) and Naruto's on his dominant rasengan hand (right.)
Put it all together and we have Naruto botching up his attack (98% of me is declaring it on purpose) because
1: He wants to undo IT
2: He needs to clash with Sasuke's chidori/dominant (seal) hand
3: He didn't want to kill Sasuke
Naruto fails if he kills Sasuke.
Now for Naruto's plan:
The last few panels, we clearly see that both Sasuke and Naruto exausted all their chakra stores. What Naruto knows he has that Sasuke doesn't, is a partner that can collect chakra for him (Kuruma duh)
And obviously Kuruma gets his Chakra stolen by Sasuke with his Rinnegan powers.
On accident? Nope. It's all according to Naruto's plan. Naruto has now fought the Rinnegan countless times, he didn't just all of a sudden forget it's ability to steal chakra. They are physically touching for crying out loud.
As stated above, they were both out of Chakra... without Chakra, there can be no Rasen/Chidori clash. Without a clash, IT won't get released on Naurto's terms.
Naruto is 100% aware of this.
The only way to provide Sasuke with chakra in order to "trick" him into a clash was to trick him into stealing it from Kuruma. Naruto is a trickster ninja afterall.
Now Naruto has the stage set for their Chakra clash, all according to Naruto's plan.
Notice Naruto's hands are hidden under water? Get ready for Naruto's first (base/exhausted mode) double rasengan, one to clash with Sasuke and release IT, and the other to Sausgay's douchebag stomach.
To sum up for non readers
Naruto purposely failed his Rasengan because Sasuke's chidori failed him also. Naruto intends and needs to clash with Sasuke's seal to release IT.
Naurto purposely let Kuruma's chakra get stolen to give Sasuke Chakra (both of their chakra stores were depleted) in order to trick him into Chidori/Rasengan clashing.
The panels of the God Tree IT victims hadn't been shown in forever, so take it as foreshadowing their release soon.
As for the double Rasengan counter:
Naruto's hand are hidden in the water for a reason. I mean look. Their knees and feet can stay on top the water just fine... but his hands can't? He's prepping dem Rasengans.
Picture it this way
