Even after this when he gained KCM he was only limited to using 1 clone or else he'd die due to Kurama tussling with him. Naruto didn't understand this and spammed clones in every direction during the war. Again, he was spared by Kurama showing mercy by not fighting him for chakra.

To summarize, this is how Naruto gained full control of the kyuubi.

Stage 1: "Lend me your power!"
Stage 2: "Help me dad!"
Stage 3: "Save me Mom!"
Stage 4: "The kyuubi took pity on me/we became friends. Fully mastered!"

Bail out>Bail out>Pity>friendship>profit.
