I think he must have powerful chakra, as well as the obvious abundance, he has a very powerful life-force, etc. Actually, by that logic Hashirama should also be able to handle the Rinnegan (both eyes too).

Although, if you look at Madara and Nagato they look incredibly similar. :| Who knows, maybe he had some Uchiha in him from somewhere. :| Though extremely slim chance and probably nothing more than fanfic.

But, more Rinne techs would've been good too, but he had only had it for a little while. Oh well, disappointed that Madara didn't show more though, he should have been multi-pathing like Edo Nagato.
