This settles it. With Sharingan he could just see through it. Without it you have to be aware you are being affected and use chakra control.
It was explained some time ago when Naruto&Kakashi fought Itachi.

yes i know, but my point is that even with his chakra control, he needed the sharingan to notice it and nagato's rinnegan hasnt been shown to see through genjutsu so even with his chakra control he would still be caught in it

Not really he just needed chakra control. Anyways , leave it at that. You need to be aware to cancel gen with chakra control.

In a battle just chakra control isnt good enough( take C for example), all sasuke needs to do is pressure nagato like he did danzo and once nagato fall for it, he isnt getting out
