Not only is this battle about abilities it's also about information about your opponent. I favored Itachi in this battle because he's obviously younger than the 4th and he knows the abilities of the 4th. We're also talking about different timelines with these two characters were alive.
That means Minato before the ninetails attack and Itachi before Sasuke defeats him.
Minato has no information about the Mangekyo sharingan. Since he hasn't battled anyone with it. He knows about the sharingan but MS is way more advanced.
Itachi was young when Minato battled against Tobi and then developed the MS. He also knows of what the 4th is capable of eg: Rasengan and FTG.
Itachi takes control of the battle cause he knows more and if you have no information about the MS that's deadly. One slip and make eye contact the battles over. With all these saying that Minato will throw kunais and spread out his jutsus itachi won't let any of those kunais behind him. Even if one did slip pass he has susanoo.. Though he can't keep it up for long itachi would just use his amaterasu on each kunai that's been planted on the ground. So minato can't use FTG, base speed can't help cause minatos a close range fighter.
The only possible outcome that minato will win is if he runs until itachi uses up all his chakra with susanoo then takes advantage of his vision.

the one about naruto's birth where kushina talks to sasukes mom and its definite that sasukes mom and kushina have some kind of friendship because of the dialouge....so if the couples had any kind of friendship or relationship then minato could have easily found out more about the sharingan that way too. I mean of course who knows though...if i am wrong about this then let me know but otherwise
