First of all the bolded^. If that was the case, why did'nt the 3rd choose a successor for the next 12 years? He would have been even more past his prime after Minato died than before, where's the logic behind this? And at that time you claim Hiruzen is way past his prime, Minato had been dead for 12 years. Assuming he was Hokage for 2-3 years(reasonable time frame) that puts Hiruzen 16 years younger than he was in that frame.
And at that time, he still chose Minato to be the 4th Hokage.
And about Hiruzen's prime, Jiraiya was his student and witnessed all of it, yet he still called Minato the shinobi to whom all others pale in comparison. Why?
Why is it that kishi shows Kakashi, after all these years still having flashbacks of Minato's abilities yet Jiraiya never had similar flashbacks of Hiruzen prime's strength?
The 3rd Hokage was alive during the reign of both the 2nd Hokage and the 1st Hokage, surely if the 1st was the strongest his flashback in Hiruzen's memory at such a time would have been more appropriate? Hashirama also protected the village against Madara, not just Minato.
Even if he is Naruto's dad, it does'nt make sense that at a time when Naruto is'nt even present, Hiruzen has flashbacks of Minato? Please note i did not list Tsunade being reminded of the 4th when Naruto crushed the first Pain body, as
that was shown just because he's Naruto's dad, not because of his own strength. The scene with Hiruzen was in a completely different context, and to me it seems a stretch to say that scene was based only on Minato's relation to the hero of the series.
And here is what he said exactly, see it for yourself:

There was never a man that could surpass him.
Words straight from the manga and the 4th Raikage's mouth.
When was this prime? Has kishi shown it anywhere, in any flashback in the manga? The knowledge about his prime comes from Iruka's statement, which can be refuted and is up to interpretation. That's your personal interpretation of that statement, for example Iruka says 'was said to be', that's world's apart from saying 'he was the strongest Hokage'. And to me, personally, the fact that kishi chose to show Minato's statue on page 17 at that time suggests he was above Hiruzen in abilities.
Thank you for pointing that out, i thought by underlining it people would understand. Plus reps.
