1st of all, he wasn't forced. We saw his flashbacks. He chose it himself. And for what? Konoha, the village that commited and ruined the life of Nagato, Kabuto, Hizashi etc. Itachi didn't think of what would have happened to Sasuke. Sasuke could have been killed multiple times in P1. And what does Itachi do? Stays out. Itachi was a disgrace to the name of Uchiha.

Don't get me wrong, I like Itachi, but his decision was not thought properly. His life is based on burden. Not tragic.​

He was stuck between a rock and a hard place. What he did for Sasuke was the best he could do with obito breathing down his back, and needing to protect Konoha. Not to mention he wanted Sasuke to remain and become a proud and strong Uchiha and Konoha shinobi.

Lel, Itachi wasn't mental. He was wise. Shisui gave him his eyes in order to protect the name of the Uchiha. What does Itachi do? Disgrace his friend's legacy. Itachi had many ways to fix the problems.

He finally lost everything. He lost all hope. Izuna was Madara's one sliver of hope.

He then lived with the guilt for nearly a century, dying and suffering through old age and immobility. Of course he suffered more.
