Well, in a real battle, where the characters fight seriously and are 100%, it can not easily.

Naruto and Sasuke could have countered Madara's jutsu aresenal and Madara didnt really care at that point of using those fancy jutsus, he just wanted to cast the IT but also mainly due to his tiredness he couln't use Preta Path against Naruto's Lava RS. It wasn't a plot nerf really.

Because in a duel where the characters they have forgotten techniques that have (I am referring to all three, not just Madara) for convenience of the plot, is not a real duel.

Like when Madara has been cut in two by Rock Lee when he had 100 ways to defend himself.

Dude this was nothing new, it happened in 90% of Naruto and Sasuke fights. Kakuzu is a prime example, he just happened to for get he had fire style and two living creatures to attack with.

Everyone Naruto has beat were stronger than him at that point in time. Neji forgot he had byukugan, Gaara forgot he uses sand for defense, Kakuzu forgot he had long rang ninjutsu, pain forgot he...Nothing but Naruto had a lot of help same for raikage.
