Alright, I'll make this simple for the time being.

Please tell me what you know about genjutsu, who are the most well known for there usage of it? Detail is important.

I'm still a novice but I will do my best.

Genjutsu is one of the three main technique types used by shinobi along with ninjutsu and taijutsu. Genjutsu techniques are focused on controlling a persons senses. This is done by controlling the flow of chakra in a persons brain. More preciously Genjutsu controls the flow of chakra in a persons nervous system. Genjutsu doesn't cause physical damage to a person. Genjutsu like ninjutsu requires the use of chakra. Hand signs are also required except in the special cases of kekkei genkai.

Genjutsu techniques deceive a persons senses by using illusions. These illusions are created by harnessing spiritual energy which controls imagination. This is classified as Yin Release. This energy is used to take control of the chakra flow in a persons brain. Doing this the caster can trap their enemy in an illusion of their own creation. The illusion can be used to bind a person or to deceive a persons senses into feeling physical pain. This makes it suitable for battle as well as interrogation. After being subjected to this type of genjutsu a person is normally left mentally drained. Genjutsu can also be used for concealment. The Second Mizukage was famous for this with his giant clam summon. The clam produces a mist that acts as a mirage and conceals the summoner. Sight is not the only trigger for genjutsu. Sound and smell can also trigger genjutsu though admittedly I'm not as familiar with these. The sound village is the most famous for using sound based genjutsu.

Genjutsu can be broken by disrupting the flow of chakra in a persons brain. This is known as Genjutsu dissipation and is difficult to perform alone. Sakura is well known for her ability to recognize and break genjutsu. If the Genjutsu can't be broken alone then a person can receive chakra from another person to break it. A person can also break a Genjutsu by forcing intense physical pain on themselves. These techniques don't work for some of the more advanced genjutsu.

Genjutsu is a staple of the Uchiha. Using their visual powers from the sharingan the Uchiha excel at trapping people in Genjutsu. In particular Itachi Uchiha excelled at this. The uchiha also have more advanced genjutsu that is unlocked using the mangekyou sharingan. Kurenai Yūhi of the leaf village is also well known for her genjutsu. Most of the time she uses Genjustu to bind her enemy. I've named what I consider the most famous Genjutsu users, but their are several others.

Genjutsu Detection:

In essence there are two ways to detect genjutsu: either figure out its an illusion or notice the fluctuation on your chakra flow. To figure out its an illusion, the target needs to analyze the information he is receiving from the illusion and detect what is wrong with it or performing an educated guess. While the most used method, its also the most flawed and, regardless of any fact, is nothing more than a gamble as ones reasoning can always be wrong. Its also sometimes slow, as some illusions are very detailed and perfected to the point that noticing its an illusion may be virtually impossible. Detecting the fluctuation in your chakra flow depends on the situation but mainly depends on your abilities as only Doujutsu or Sensory Ninjas can have ways to detect fluctuations in ones chakra flow. Doujutsu users have, however, a limitation that hinders them to a bigger degree: if the illusion is high ranked (A-Rank for Byakugan and Rinnegan, while on the Sharingan, dependent on its stage) and takes complete control over their eyesight, they can't see their own chakra flow as what they will see is what is the illusion. Chakra sensors on the other hand need to figure out its a genjutsu or that something is wrong to then will themselves to focus on their chakra flow and notice its fluctuation unless they have the Chakra Sensing technique already active. Basically, if they don't figure out nothing is wrong, they won't sense themselves. This means that Chakra Sensoring ninjas work on a hybrid basis. In one hand they need to figure out some minor sign that its an illusion but on the other hand once its found they can use their sensing abilities to confirm it without a doubt.

One misconception generally associated with Genjutsu is that ones chakra travells to ones target. This is false or, if true, was never proven or showed in the manga/anime. If this was the case, we would never see Doujutsu or Chakra Sensory users getting caught in Genjutsu as they "would see it coming".

Another point that leads to many discussions is the fact that Clones may or may not be affected by Illusions. The truth is that they are in fact affected by illusions but since they don't have an organic, real body, they don't suffer pain or reflexive actions based on that illusion. They will experience it and see it and be affected by it in terms of their senses, but they don't take mental or otherwise physical damage nor do they experience suffering or torture, faint or otherwise fall asleep or become paralyzed as a result of the Illusion.

Well if you don't have a custom genjutsu that tricks the opponents vision and hearing then you can use two seperate that do that and by layering you fool both of his senses. the point of genjutsu is to make it dificult to detect and with two illusions it only makes it even harder, yes you dispel both at the same time but only if you figure out you're under genjutsu.

I personally had to get some help to answer that question.

(Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique

Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.

Okay so, here I would like you to focus your chakra towards my clone and insert it into its brain; that makes him believe that the surrounding area has changed, but of course within reason. This technique can only change the way the area looks, can't do anything else besides that. So you could change the terrain to rocky area, green plains and even a desert, but you have to be smart about it.

Advantages:

• 1. This jutsu requires no hand seals or complicated gestures to cast and it has a low chakra cost.
• 2. With shuttle changes to the terrain it shouldn't be too complicated to make the genjutsu believable.
• 3. This jutsu could be used for concealment as well as creating an opening to attack.

Disadvantages:

• 1. You have to be relatively close to your opponent to caste it.
• 2. Since it is a low rank Genjutsu it can easily be dispelled.
• 3. The jutsu can only effect sight.

How you would use it in battle: I see this mostly being used to create an opening for an attack. Since the Genjustu is limited in what it can effect it should only be used for shuttle changes.
How you would counter it: Causing a small amount of damage to my body such as biting my finger or using a genjutsu release.
How you perform it: I would gather my chakra in my body and release it through chakra points. Once on the outside of my body I would direct my chakra towards my target. My chakra would enter the targets brain and alter the flow of chakra through their nervous system. With my chakra in the targets brain I would use my conciseness to imagine a change in the terrain. Then I would use my spiritual energy to bring the illusion to life in the targets eyes.

Genkai stands on a grassy field mid distance from her sensei's clone. The sky is clear and the sun is shinning. She builds up the chakra in her body and releases it through her chakra points. The chakra enters the brain of the clone and alters the chakra flow in its nervous system. Genkai then uses her spiritual energy to make the illusion reality for the clone. The clone is staring directly at Genkai when it slowly starts to squint it's eyes. The clone sees the sun getting brighter and brighter. With his eyes barely open the sun becomes too bright and the clone places his right hand on his forehead to shade himself from the light. Temporarily blinded Genkai pulls out a kunai and throws it at the clone. The clone gets hit and disappears.

Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

This one seems a little useless, perform the big amount of handseals [silly imo for such a low rank technique] then insert your chakra into your targets brain, they will see a shower of cherry blossom petals, this cover his vision. Mainly used to cover your tracks, and/or retreat or whatnot.

Advantages:

• 1. It has low chakra cost.
• 2. It is well suited for concealment.
• 3. It completely blocks eyesight as opposed to slightly changing what a person sees.

Disadvantages:

• 1. It takes a lot of hand seals to perform.
• 2. Unless trees with cherry blossoms are around it would be hard to pass this off as reality.
• 3. Again it only effects one sense.

How you would use it in battle: I would use this for a quick escape from my opponent. I would also use it in an area with trees so it is believable.
How you would counter it: Physical pain or Genjutsu release. I could also use a tech ranked higher than the genjutsu and create a chakra surge.
How you perform it: I would gather up my chakra and release on the outside of my body. Then I would make 5 handseals to further focus the chakra. The chakra would enter my targets mind and alter their chakra flow. Then I would imagine dissolving into cherry blossom petals and make the illusion come to life with my spiritual energy.

What is the timing for this technique with the 5 handseals? It obviously takes longer than the last technique, but I assume it can still be completed in one move. If so then is it just assumed that the 5 handseals can be done in one move?

Five hand seals really is a huge amount, but for how long the technique is actually ranked, it's pain. Yes you can use for a quick escape.

Ah, perform the seal and repeat the process of inserting your chakra into my clone. While you're doing that, get a paper bomb ready and then throw it at the clone, the clone will see a clone of you racing towards him, but really it's actually a paper bomb, and once the paper bombs comes within the area of them, it goes boom. IT would be nice if this was longer, like mid-range. But you could still pull this off nicely.

Advantages:

• 1. The jutsu is relativity easy to perform only requiring one hand seal and a low amount of chakra.
• 2. The enemy has little time to release the genjutsu before damage is done.
• 3. It can be cast in any terrain.

Disadvantages:

• 1. The jutsu can only be used in short range.
• 2. The jutsu is easy to break.
• 3. The genjutsu will only last for one move.

How you would use it in battle: I would use this jutsu as a first attack before others. It doesn't do much damage but the enemy still has to block it. When they block it or take the damage I would immediately follow with another jutsu.
How you would counter it: Small physical pain or genjutsu release.
How you perform it: I would gather my chakra in my body and release it through chakra points. Once on the outside of my body I would perform a handseal and focus my chakra. Then I would direct my chakra towards my target taking control of the chakra flow in their brain. Trapped in my genjutsu I would grab a paper bomb and throw it at the target while using my spiritual energy to cast an illusion. The illusion would make the target think a clone of mine is running towards them. When the clone reached the target the paper bomb would explode.

Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.

This technique doesn't need any seals to perform it, as well it goes up to mid-range. I think all you have to do is look at them, this technique allows you to cast a illusion over your target, he will see many clones of you, coming out of the ground and trees, well pretty much all around them. And, if the clones are attacked, they will double, and keep doubling. Use this with the actual shadow clones technique, it would work oh so very well.

Advantages:

• 1. This jutsu would be great for creating an opening to attack since the enemy would be concentrated on the clones.
• 2. Easy to perform and low chakra cost.
• 3. Can be used at short or mid range.

Disadvantages:

• 1. The enemy might easily be able to tell they are in an illusion. Especially when clones start coming out of physical objects, i.e. trees, rocks...etc.
• 2. The jutsu can be easily dispelled.
• 3. Only effects sight.

How you would use it in battle: This would be perfect for distracting the enemy. The user has an opening to attack or a chance to escape.
How you would counter it: Genjutsu release or minor pain.
How you perform it: After building up chakra on the outside of my body I would direct it towards my target. The chakra would alter the flow of chakra in the targets brain effectively trapping them in the genjutsu. I would then conceptualize clones of me appearing and surrounding the target on all sides. Using my spiritual energy the illusion would take over the eyesight of the target and the clones would attack.

Description: The user performs two handseals causing it to appear as if a swirl of leaves surrounds the opponent. The swirl eventually falls away, and after a few seconds, the opponent sees the image of whatever they fear the most, shocking them and potentially causing them to faint.

Funny technique. Perform the two seals, then as always insert your chakra into your targets brain, they will picture an amount of leaves surround them, the leaves will go away at some point, then your target will think they are seeing their biggest fear. This technique doesn't any damage, but it will give them a small shock, and if you're lucky they will faint.

• 1. The jutsu has the potential to quickly end a battle if pulled of successfully.
• 2. Could be used for battle or interrogation.
• 3. It has low chakra cost.

Disadvantages:

• 1. Can only be used at short range.
• 2. The jutsu is easy to break.
• 3. With 2 handseals it's a little complicated to perform for a D rank jutsu.

How you would use it in battle: I would use this as a distraction as it's easy to dispel, and if just so happens that the opponent faints then great.
How you would counter it: Genjutsu release or minor physical pain. I could also make a chakra surge with a higher ranked technique.
How you perform it: After building up chakra on the outside of my body I would perform two handseals to further focus it and direct it towards my target. The chakra would alter the flow of chakra in the targets brain effectively trapping them in the genjutsu. Trapped in my genjutsu I would then conceptualize a swirl of leaves surrounding the target and bring the illusion to reality using my spiritual energy. The leaves would eventually disappear and the target would see their biggest fear.

(Kori Shinchū no Jutsu) - Sly Mind Affect Technique

Description: The user casts an illusion on the opponent that makes them believe they are travelling in a straight line, when instead they are moving in circles. This is only effective on moving opponents. If the opponent travels in the circle for hours, they will be exhausted.

Okay so this technique can only work on an already moving target, one you insert your chakra into their brain, they will think they are moving in a straight line, but really they are going in circles, this gen will make them move all the time, and if you are able to pull this off, the target will be exhausted in a few short hours. Range is neat too.

Advantages:

• 1. It can be used to divert an opponent away from you or to cause severe exhausting.
• 2. It is easy to cast as it requires no hand seals or special conditions.
• 3. This genjutsu can be used regardless of the terrain, and it can be used at short or mid range.

Disadvantages:

• 1. The opponent has to be moving to use this jutsu.
• 2. It would be hard to maintain the genjutsu for long. I think after a short time most people would figure out it's a genjutsu just by not moving closer to their opponent.
• 3.Only effects sight.

How you would use it in battle: I would use it to stall my opponents movements or to create an opening to attack. I wouldn't use it to cause exhausting myself. I don't think this genjutsu can be maintained for hours.
How you would counter it: Genjutsu release or physical pain. This genjutsu would require slightly more physical pain than the others before since it is a rank higher. Something like biting a chunk from your cheek.
How you perform it: First I would make sure my target is moving. If they weren't moving I would do something to make them move. Once in short or mid range I would build up chakra in my body and release it through my chakra points. Once on the outside of my body I would direct my chakra towards the target. The chakra would take control of the chakra flow in their brain. Trapped in my genjutsu I would imagine the target running around in circles. Using my spiritual energy I would make that illusion take over the targets sight. The target would then run around in circles.

Genkai grabs a kunai from her pouch and prepares to throw it. She waits until the clones back is turned and throws the kunai. The clone gets hit and disappears.

Sensei, when we talk about ranges are their fixed numbers that define what is short, mid, and long? Or in battle do you just always need to state that your standing/moving a set range from an opponent?

Description: The user of this technique, upon casting on a stationary opponent with physical contact with them, is able to convince the enemy to give away information. However, this will only work on ninja two ranks lower and below than the caster.

Okay this technique only works on non-moving targets they either have to be standing still [which is unlikely] or you have trapped them down somehow, then by using touch you have placed them in a genjutsu, this gen convinces them to give out information they usually wouldn't. But, this technique only works on ninja that are two ranks lower then you, the caster.
