Take a look at all the main antagonists. With the exception of Orochimaru who is a maniac all the other villains are extremely calm personalities.
Villains like Madara , Obito , Pain and Sasuke are shown to be always in nirvana-mode no matter how difficult their situation is.
On the other hand Naruto ,his teacher Jiraya , the Kages are all (except Mei who is a generally neutral and not interesting character) easily enraged or carried away by their emotions.I can add Gai , Lee and some others easily.
The only exception being Kakashi.

Of cource one could say that the Akatsuki were maniacs but those were not main antagonists.

So I don't know if this is Kishimoto's mistake (or intention) but I think the manga lacks in this aspect and gives a wrong impression about how a hero in reality would look like and which aspects of him should the reader (the manga is written for children and teenagers too after all) imitate.

To conclude, the portrayal in my view is quite problematic and I would like to know what the rest of the base thinks about it.

Sasuke isn't that much calm...
Madara is unnaturally too OP so he doesn't need emotions...
Naruto and Jiraiya were portrayed as hasty, never backing down and talkative characters so they are...

Dunno why I have the same felling, However, Ppl think that the more u r calm the more evil u carry inside! I'm not involved in discussing this matter but it seems Kishi is not an exception after all ^__^...

1. Well, they are basically sociopaths, that's why they don't have emotions. And there's nothing wrong with villains being sociopaths, right?
2. Villains are supposed to be badass, and being absolutely calm and self-confident is more badass than getting all emotional and maniacal, right? :D
3. Obito made it quite clear- he doesn't care anymore. He was very angry at the beginning, when he saw rin die, but as years passed he's learnt to live with his pain and hatred. Furthermore, he is focused on creating a new world, this one has no meaning for him anymore, since it's supposed to cease to exist. Nothing that happens in it can make Obito give a ****, it's not just not his world. And pretty much the same goes for madara.

As for sasuke, I wouldn't say he's calm. He's pretty damn maniacal imo :p

Kinda suits, villians who seem to be blank killing machines but then they really have reasons for why.
That's a common mistake. Mistaking emotionless with calm.

Madara is not emotionless he hates the Senju and his own clan but still when fighting either or any other enemy he remains calm.
Pain was anything but emotionless. He even got preached by Naruto.
Obito hates too and loves Rin. Yet he didn't snap since Rin was killed.
Sasuke was never carried away by his emotions too.

One might argue that villains deny their feelings but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

And the series could and should have a calm "good guy". To give an example from another series recall L from Death Note.
Not just screaming and yelling and crying and shouting about their dreams and feelings like Naruto or the Raikage for example.

If one could describe villains in Naruto he would say "quiet" compared to the "always noisy" heros.

Edit: @Narutokyuki: exactly, so why not portray a good-calm-badass? and again calm and sociopaths are different things (sociopaths are not calm at all when in difficulty.Deidara was a sociopath for example..or Kabuto even better.)
See how many fans the calm Uchiha villains and Pain have and you shall see why the series like such a character from the "good" side.

all the villians lose there cool when they are getting owned.

Orocihmaru, nagato(at one point), kabuto all lost their cool when the time came.

U wait, madara and obito will lose their cool aswell.

I bet madara is actually the one that raged the most when he got owned by hasihrama.

Speaking of hasihrama hes is one of the few heroes in the series that isn't emo. The third hokage is also another one. Minato too.

Get you facts straight.
Orochimaru and Kabuto were never cool. And when did Nagato start yelling like Naruto does all the time?
And the problem is the "good guys" are not cool even when winning, even when owning actually.

As for Hashirama we barely even saw the guy, so characterising him is difficult.

The good guys have no class in this manga.
