Hello Tybone, I will be administrating your kenjutsu training. Before we start please answer the next questions:

1) Any previous experience with kenjutsu before? (real life and/or RP wise)

2) What is kenjutsu? (Real life and Narutoverse wise)

3) Why are you interested in kenjutsu?

Describe with the best detail possible.

Yes sir!

1) Any previous experience with kenjutsu before? (real life and/or RP wise)

In real life I never have experienced any sort of kenjutsu, although I'd be very interested in it.
RP-wise I've done several free-form battles, most of them were free-form kenjutsu.

2) What is kenjutsu? (Real life and Narutoverse wise)

Kenjutsu is literally translated the method of the sword, unlike Kendo which is the way of the sword, it's a collective name for all types of sword-fighting techniques such as Kendo and Iaido, it's origins come from Japan but it's now being taught in dojos all over the world.

In the Narutoverse Kenjutsu is simply called "Sword Technique" which is usually used in combination with other types of Jutsu such as Ninjutsu, taijutsu, chakra flow and even genjutsu in order to create powerful techniques.
An example of using chakra flow is channeling lightning into a blade which has been shown by Sasuke, Bee and Kakashi, an example of using Genjutsu together with kenjutsu is the technique used by Hayate Gekko against Baki during the Konoha Invasion arc.

There are two groups/clans which specialize in Kenjutsu; The Seven swordsmen of the Mist which all posses one of seven special swords which each contain a deathly ability, such as Zabuza's sword which when cut in half will repair itsself when cutting through blood and the Samehada which is able to absorb large amounts of chakra and feeds it to it's wielder.
The Samurai of the Land of Iron solely focus on Kenjutsu due to their inability to use any sort of ninjutsu, making them very skilled with the sword, they specialize in channeling their chakra into their swords to increase it's cutting power and the ability to release crescents of concentrated chakra which can counter ninjutsu. Their signature Kenjutsu style is Iaido or Quickdraw with which they draw their sword at such a speed that their able to prevent their enemy from forming handseals.

3) Why are you interested in kenjutsu?

The reason is pretty simple, in any sort of martial arts swordsmanship has always been my favorite, thus I also held most free-form battles here on NB with swords, but eventually just describing simple standard techniques due to the inability to use actual kenjutsu it got abit dull so I wanted to learn some actual Kenjutsu. I've also been considering to create a Samurai biography but decided to wait until I've atleast learned the basic Kenjutsu.

Impressive. So as you had experience with kenjutsu before, I think you already understand body-spirit-sword motion better.

Now, before we begin with the techniques, we will start with the basic:
-direction of the sword
-position of the body
-one handed strikes
-two handed strikes
-Body movement (Side stepping, Arc Stepping)
-Defense (Parries, Blocks, and counters)
-Taijutsu integration

Then after those, I will teach you the Basic 5 no Kamae stances, which will become very important when fighting against a Kenjutsu user.

As I like to say "There is a difference between a kid with a stick and a master swordsman". I will pwn in your body what I believe is necessary. The path will not be easy, are you willing to continue?

We will begin with sword direction.

Sword direction is simple, it is just the direction in which you strike the sword.

These are the basic directions: From above to below; From below to above; Left to Right; and Right to Left. When you become better, you will be able to chain from different directions and change the direction of the sword depending on the circumstances and body position (which we will talk later on).

Then there are the directional axis: X-axis, Y-axis, and diagonal.

Here is a visual that can explain you better:
You must be registered for see images

By combining direction and directional axis, you have a well structured attack.
For example:

*My sword is on my right hip. I place my left hand on the handle of the sword and swing diagonally upwards, hitting the left side of your body and carrying on to the right side.*

This is a pretty simple, though effective attack. Something that will help you and your opponent to have a better picture of your move, is if you describe what areas of the body you are hitting.

Another important factor, is the speed and force that your swing has; which is highly relative of the amount of hands you are using, stance, and direction.

Finally, deepness. This will determinate if you are only scratching a person's nose or actually cutting him in half. Remember to be highly detailed in this, as it not only put the enemy under pressure, but also explain better were your body position and distance is compared to the enemy's.

Any questions?
Please, don't be afraid of ask. If you don't understand something, I will go into greater detail. I want you to become the best swordsman you can possibly be, and this will not come in a single day.

I understand what you're saying, take the best out of the situation by using the most effective move depending on your stance and the way you're holding your sword aswell as being as detailed as possible in order to put the enemy under pressure and not allow them to spot a major flaw in the description. Did I say that right?

Hello, Tybone ^_^
And I understood Senpai, your explanation is more then detailed enough :D
Ok both of you, now do you understand the concept of sword direction, I will give you your exercises:

-One hundred horizontal strikes right to left.
-One hundred horizontal strikes left to right.
-One hundred vertical strikes upward.
-One hundred vertical strikes downward.
-One hundred diagonal strikes upward, right to left.
-One hundred diagonal strikes upward, left to right.
-One hundred diagonal strikes downward, right to left.
-One hundred diagonal strikes downward, left to right.

You can do this in a single post, though be as detailed as possible. Remember that speed right now isn't important, but how precise your strike are.

* tosses one bokken to each one of you*

Get to work, when you are done, come back at me.

*Goes and sits in the ground, leaning against a tree for support*

* tosses one bokken to each one of you*

Get to work, when you are done, come back at me.

*Goes and sits in the ground, leaning against a tree for support*
*I catch the bokken which it thrown towards me, holding onto it with both hands, my left hand is holding onto the outer part of the hilt while my right hand is holding onto the inner part, I then lower the bokken, pointing it diagonally towards the ground still holding onto it with both hands*

Doesn't sound too hard!

Horizental
*I raise the bokken, shifting it into a horizental position pointing to the right as I move it towards the back of my neck with the edge pointing outwards and the tip now pointing towards the left, my left arm is infront of my neck while my right arm is pointing outwards behind me*

*I then send a horizental strike from my right towards my left into the air, while twisting my upper body during the strike in order to add strength to it, then I regain my stance as I repeat the process until I've reached 100 strikes*

*I then reverse my stance, having the tip point to the right instead with my right arm being infront of my neck and my left arm pointing outwards as I begin sending 100 horizental strikes from left to right into the air*

Vertical
*As I finish all horizental strikes I place my left foot forward, leaving my right foot behind it as I twist my upper body to the right and position the bokken on the right side of me, with the tip pointing diagonally down towards the ground behind me*

*I then create a vertical upwards strike into the air and while doing so I twist my body a little towards the left to add more strength into the strike, I repeat this process until I reach the required 100*

*After finishing the upward slashes, I straighten up my body and put my left foot forward with my right foot behind it, I raise the bokken up above my head, having the tip point diagonally upwards towards the sky behind me*

*I then create a vertical downwards strike into the air and while doing so I make a step forward with my left foot to add strength to the strike, after the strike I step my left foot back and repeat the process until I reach 100 strikes*

Diagonal upward
*Having finished the vertical strikes I place my left foot forward, leaving my right foot behind it as I twist my upper body to the right and position the bokken on the right side of me, with the tip pointing diagonally down towards the ground behind me as I then shift it's position a few degrees towards the right and move the hilt a couple of centimeters away from my side*

*I then send a diagonal strike into the air, starting alligned to my right waist and ends alligned to my left shoulder, I twist my upper body to the left as I strike to add strength to it, I repeat this process until I reach 100 strikes*

*I then reverse the position, having the bokken positioned next to my left waist as I send a diagonal strike into the air, starting alligned to my left waist and ends alligned to by left shoulder, I repeat this process until I reach 100 strikes*

Diagonal downward
*I straighten up my body and put my left foot forward with my right foot behind it, I raise the bokken up above my head, having the tip point diagonally upwards towards the sky behind me, I then twist my the bokken a few degrees towards the left as I move the bokken towards the right until my hands are above my right shoulder*

*I then send a diagonal downward strike into the air, which starts at my right and finishes alligned to my left waist, I repeat that process 100 times*

*I then reverse my stance, sending a diagonal downwards strike into the air which starts at my right and finishes alligned to my right wait, I repeat this process 100 times aswell*

*Having finished all the strikes I fall down onto the ground, panting heavily, dropping the bokken next to me*

You sure weren't kidding about it not being an easy path.

Okay both of you, before we begin the next part, come and take a seat in front of me to rest a bit as we talk the next lesson.

The next lesson will be position of the body. In your own words, what do you think this means?

Senpai this is just a guess, I don't have much knowledge in swords, but I believe you are referring to the stances we should make when using the sword.
Using a stance I believe helps increase its power, as well as speed for offense, and defense.
Samurai's often use Stances, see the picture below.

Position of the body? I believe that the position of the body is one of the most vital parts of swordsmanship if not the most vital, with the right stance a swordsman is able to put more strength in his strikes aswell as put more strength in defence, using the right stance for the right situation can make a huge difference to the outcome of a battle.
A stronger man with a bad body position can succumb to a weaker man who positions his body correctly.

Yes, both of you are correct..

*sips on a bit of sake*

Okay then, body position. It is important to know how your body is placed in the next situations:

a) Before attacking
b) Before defending
c) While attacking
d) While defending
e) After attacking
f) After defending

If you are able to visualize what your body is doing, and not only the arm your swinging with. If you are able to move your body correctly, you will be able to put maximum force into your strikes; and will be able to defend against major attacks easier, giving you an gigantic window to counterattack.

There are a vast amount of stances that you can learn, but in this training I will teach you the Basic 5 no Kamae stances. Make sure to pay attention and ask questions when need to, this will be the most important lesson of this entire thread.

The 5 no Kamae stances are: Chudan, Jodan, Gedan, Hasso and Waki.

Before we start, do any of you have questions?

Yes Senpai, my first question ^_^
Can we create our own Stances, once we've mastered Kenjutsu?
I just thought I ask this now since we're talking about Stances ^_^

Well, now that you have started kenjutsu, you are able to submit your own custom kenjutsu techniques, though I will wait until you finish this course with me so you can get a better idea of this beautiful art.

With custom kenjutsu techniques, you are able to create your own "style" of kenjutsu, and with that, your own type of stances. Anyways, you are free of free forming your own type of stance, but you will not gain anything "supernatural" from it.

Any other questions?
