You're the one overrating Itachi or underestimating the copy ninja. Everyone who fight him acknowledge his power. Even Itachi said that he use Sharingan even better than the majority or Uchiwas. He was the first one to survive Hidan and Kakuzus combo(Hidan said that). Pain himself has said that if he don't kill him at that moment, he could become dangerous for him.
