Kakashi and Gai really equals?

Kisame without samehada only lost to Gai because he didn't know Gai's tech was taijutsu, and even then kisame wasn't even knocked out by the tech.
Kakashi has full intel on Gai, and according to naruto, can most likely access up to the fifth gate. They are equals.

Let's see....guy killed kisame by himself, but I can imagine kakashi doing that...

I never said Kakashi was slow, but the fact remains that he is nowhere near as fast as Gai using seven gates. Hell, I'm willing to bet Rock Lee is faster than Kakashi using only five. Also, it doesn't matter what kind of Sharingan you have and what it let's you see if you can't react quick enough.lol sasuke was just got Sharingan and tht was only two wheel eye he need 3 wheel to see thing tht comeing at him. so yea buddy know naruto fact.
and kakshi fast too so think about tht to.and very smart way smarter then gai.so yeaaaa try something els on me
Point and case, Madara has Rinnegan/EMS and he saw the Raikage coming straight at him but the best he could do is block, no counter. Now is Gai as fast as the Fourth Raikage? Hell no, but Kakashi ain't Madara either.

Yeah, Gai can open 7, but kakashi has all his abilities plus the sharingan and the physical enhancements that 5 gates would grant him.
The statement that implies that kakashi can open 5 is when naruto states that kakashi has better taijutsu that lee in part 2.

pure speculation. If this was the case, kishi would have made Gai say something to explicitly tell us he was holding back, he didn't.

And here Gai is standing over Kisame, with the seventh gate still released.
He could have easily killed Kisame here if he wanted to but he didn't
because they wouldn't have been able to get any intel that way.

Of course Gai could have killed kisame after he defeated him. But just because they wanted to get intel on him doesn't mean jack about the strength of Gai's tech. Afternoon tiger was used at full power unless otherwise stated by a character. Kishi constantly uses character statements as a way of explaining things like these in which a character is hindered or holding back, because there was none it is speculation.

kakashi's main strength is misdirection. gai's main strength is the gates, which is self damaging. i think kakashi will fool gai into using the gates needlessly to wear him down, he's super cautious and that will give him the edge. he NEVER attacks without planning, gai on the other hand is a berserker.
I agree, there is no true way of telling whether or not he was holding back with Afternoon Tiger because he didn't say so himself. But given the circumstances, and the fact that Gai wasn't exhausted right after I could only assume he could have put more into it if he wanted.
Both of them are equals...Kisame is the common link to prove this...according to Itachi Kisame would've lost to Kakashi and Guy actually beat Kisame ...so the realtion is likse this :
Itachi > Kakashi = Guy > Kisame.
Itachi > Kakashi = Guy > Kisame.
