Asuma reacted to a swing of Samehada once and only caught him off guard because he used the added ninjutsu, not to mention Kisame knew coming in that he wasn't really trying to kill anyone with Itachi there. A decent feat but nothing that puts him equal to Kakashi here really. Although to be fair early part 2 Neji was caught by a water clone completely.

Using retconned and inapplicable feats from Part 1 is nonsense. Call it what you like, but Kisame obviously underwent a massive change in power from Part 1 to Part 2. He's capable of fighting B in CQC who MS Sasuke was getting merked by. So, if we follow your logic by extension, Asuma is stronger than MS Sasuke in CQC (absolute nonsense).

What chapter is the Neji/Zetsu thing pulled from? I'd like to read the context.

I doubt it's even a retcon. In both cases Asuma and Guy were standing on water. Against Guy the strike basically caused an explosion while almost nothing happened to the water against Asuma.

Since he's going to use part 1 feats it's only fair to compare them on equal ground to the part 2 feats, and in that department Guys feat is far more impressive.

I hate when people tend to underrate part 1 characters, and say that things were retconned. I simply see it as Asuma is simply good enough to not lose to a restrained Kisame in CQC (restrained because he didn't fully use Samehada). Even databook hypes him as a good cqc user. Simply lacks feats. And losing against Hidan is not a bad feat, considering hidan is very good at cqc too.
