Jiraya is the most overrated character

Jiraiya was powerful enough that even Kisame and Itachi acknowledged that the best they could achieve together was a stalemate. Nagato defeated Jiraiya because Jiraiya didn't know the secret of his paths; Nagato said so himself. Nagato underestimated Jiraiya's genjutsu capabilities.

Minato was also one of the strongest ninja ever in existence. To those who underestimate Jiraiya and Minato, that's a mistake. Minato was able to defeat Tobi; no contemporary shinobi have even hit or threatened Tobi so far in the manga besides Konan. On top of this; this wasn't just a one on one fight. Minato was able to fight the full powered Kurama, Tobi, whilst saving and protecting Naruto and Kushina. To say that Minato is overrated would just plainly be stupid.

The same goes for Jiraiya.

Won't say he can beat current Pain, Sasuke, or Naruto. But an unhealthy Itachi? Certainly. Not overhyped in the slightest, most rate him as equal to Itachi, and Itachi isn't top 10 either.

I don't think he is the most powerful bin in the cosmos. haha and if ppl are saying something like that they are wrong. I personally like him cuz his personality and believes.

Seriously? xd Jiraya beating Pein. Jiraya had difficulty before sage mode just dealing with the Animal Paths. The environment also was made up of hiding places to allow him to enter sage mode.

People are taking this statement the completely wrong way. Kisame and Itachi knew nothing about Jirayas abilities. Kisame was just going off Jirayas hype as a Sannin. I cannot stress this enough.

Noted: Itachi already defeated Orochimaru, a Sannin when he was 13 and imo was ≥ to Jiraya.

Jiraya can in no way beat Itachi. Especially without sage mode. No naming for the fact Jiraya has nothing to counter OP Susanno, Amaterasu and Tsyukomi. Jiraya has no experience battling with a sharigan user especially on Itachi's level.

How will Jiraya even fight him with just staring at his feet. :sy:

Kisame well this battle can go either way. However I believe Kisame has the upperhand, but this is debatable.

One other silly thing I heard was that Jiraya can touch people and they turn to frogs. Not exactly. I won't even bother posting manga pages because it's such a simple thing to understand. Jiraya had to transfer sage mode chakra into his targets by grasping them and focusing.

It is not as easy as a simple "touch". Which is not something an opponent above fodder would just let him do.

I think I've countered his hype pretty well. In no way am I trying to downplay his abilities, but he is not current top 10 now IMO. Saying he would win against characters like Pein, Sasuke, Naruto and Itachi is what forced me to make this thread.

I'm going to start off by saying yes, Jiraiya is my favorite character(if my sig and avatar haven't made it clear). But I do believe that Jiraiya is one of the most powerful characters in the series. Definately not the most powerful, probably not even top 5 anymore, but still strong. His way of the ninja was the same as Naruto's as Naruto somewhat inherited Jiraiya's will(and we all know Naruto is incredibly powerful).

And like this guy posted, Jiraiya's knowledge and believe about the ninja world were spot-on, some of the most powerful shinobi have praised him for being a top-class shinobi in general. Nagato and Konan praised him throughout their whole lives and Minato said there was no better shinobi in the world that Jiraiya that he could think of. People like Itachi and Kisame knew not to engage with him whether they thought they could defeat him or not, they would rather not challenge him at all because the outcome would either mean death of serious cause of injury.

Also, like Itachi has just recently said to Kabuto, the ability to forgive yourself for what you're unable to do yourself, look at yourself and realize what you can and cannot do because your comrades are there to make up for it. Which Jiraiya had the entire series. A flashback with Jiraiya thinking to himself about his life being full of failures. Yet he was still praised by thousands as a legend in the ninja world.

And another thing, what he said to Orochimaru during the Sannin showdown, telling Orochimaru the true requirements of a powerful shinobi, and it's not the number of powerful techniques you possess, rather the ability to never give up no matter what obstacle you're facing. And if you want the last statement made by Jiraiya of what a true shinobi is, read my quote in my sig. It's my favorite quote from Jiraiya.

But yes, he's definately not the strongest, but saying he's overrated is a bit extreme in my opinion.

Naruto's massive plot no jutsu was mostly because he had knowledge and Deva wasn't up to it at the beginning of the fight. If Jiraiya had knowledge, His SM run out like Naruto's did, and wouldn't be so helpless without SM unlike Naruto when he got defeated by just Bansho Ten'n and got pinned to the ground, he has so many ways of getting Deva in his interval without even getting close to him.
Kisame and Itachi ran from Jiraiya, he had no way to counter the 'walls of meat' Samehada couldn't eat them because they're not chakra, water techniques won't do anything to them cuz if its strong enough to be fire resistant, what the hell would water do? They'll close in and Kisame gets digested by the fire breathing toad of Myoboku.
