Do you know how we get farmland? We clear forests. You heard that right, humans clear forests for humans to plant crops for eating. It's selfishness but it's necessary for survival. Should the Japanese government favor pets over their own people? I think not.

It's just one of the harsh choices of being in power bro.

I think the example is quite irrelevant, as pets are not something we need to eat so as to survive, in this case they are a chess piece on the chess board of many other 'products' for entertainment and life-style.
I agree with a basic selfishness being necessary for survival, but as I stated, the topics are not that closely related.

Oh man, clear your anger for a moment and get an open mind. I'll break it down for you, since they are too related.

- Humans grow hungry, need farmland
- Humans clear forest
- Animals flee the forest
- With no home, animals are left to die

You mentioned we need to eat to survive. And in your opening post you said that the animal treatment was barbaric. Well then, what solution would you propose to them? Let the pets live? The Japanese are humans too, and they need to eat. With the amount of animals/pets in their country they needed a drastic measure to save themselves. It's also survival at it's finest bro, and I really don't understand why you don't see that.

You don't suppose there wasn't a better way to that? :\

I'm not the Japanese government dude. Sure there might have been a better way to do things, but there must have been a flip side to it. Like too expensive, too big a project, too lengthy a time ... you honestly think they didn't think this through?

=3= Angry? Who?
Either way, I see things quite clearly. Thank you nonetheless for your breaking things down for me.
Firstly, things are as you say, related, one way or another in these matters, but they may also be highly relevant or the opposite.

When I wrote about the treatment of these animals, I was referring to the way people make use of them as accessories, overlooking the fact that they are, by doing so, also treating them as such.

I think, you might also have misunderstood the key concept, being that they are not animals usually living in the wilderness, as they are pets, living with us in towns and populated areas.

As for a solution, I haven't thought of any until now, but the ideal one would be for people to realize their insensitivity, hence not buying pets with such intentions, that is keeping them as accessories(I feel I have used this word a lot nowU_U).
Through realization, they would probably get to familiarise themselves with concepts such as 'responsibility' and 'care' for pets, since they are living beings, in need of care, be they those of the biological or loving kind.
There would most likely be less people buying pets, thus the industry would have to acclimatize again, decreasing the breeding they are currently doing in excess. They would then probably not have to gas so many pets.

You see, the problem here isn't our necessities for survival as much as they are interests in our own convenience, relative to trends.

I'm pretty sure people in Japan treat pets the same as, if not better than, Westerners or other Asians. They're not cannibals.

I know your key concept, thanks.

Eh number one, accessories? Just because of the mechanized gas chambers you're already generalizing Japanese people treating pets as accessories? Lol no bro, it's a solution that they have no choice but to follow because it's the law.

It's not buying pets that's the problem, it's the number of animals living as pets in the cities or towns. You sound like PETA too much, when they're not doing anything illegal with the animals. They love their dogs and cats as much as you do, heck maybe even more. Also, reducing the number of people buying pets won't do a single thing. You can't control the animals' mating season. You can't go and castrate every pet in Japan to solve that. Adding the strays in the mix, and there's a situation with too many variables which the government cannot solve.

The problem is directly related to food, to survival. It's not about their own selfish interests, as you so put it. I mean, what would they gain out of gassing animals? Fur? Oil? Having that huge number of animals in their country takes a toll in food supplies you know, and Japan isn't exactly the number one country to buy cheap rice from. Heck meat by the kilo is much more expensive than a PSP there.

Then that is arrogance. Who gave them the right to kill so many animals? Should we go kill Chinese cause they are way to much in our home planet? :|
They were the ones to popularize in the first place. That was a non-ethical decision.

I think you've misunderstood yet again. Also, I hope I didn't come off as trying to insinuate these people being cannibals, that'd be a gruesome mistake on my end, I apologize.
I agree with your point about Japanese people treating pets similarly to people of other nationality, it is not something I have argued before, but I think it is to generalize to say that Japanese treat pets better than people of other nationalities, I have a friend who's family owns dogs, they treat them very kindly, although their chihuahua is subject to a wee bit animosity, she has been horribly spoiledU_U. I have also seen people hit their dogs, which means that every country has their good and bad owners, I think.

I see, you're welcome.

I don't think I'm generalizing, I said so in my opening post, but may have expressed myself as if I was later on, which wasn't intended, my apologies.
And, it isn't because of these chambers that I say they are being treated as accessories, but because people buy the pets with such intentions. That is, because they fill the role of playing a part of their life-style etc.
Also, you're right in saying that they have not much choice in the matter, since it has come to this point now, or since a while ago, but nonetheless, don't you think that having people realize the responsibility of owning a pet, will scare some people away from buying them for their own shallow convenience?

I'm not saying you can control their mating season with greater success, since they can mate more or less whenever, like us humans. BUT, they are breeding them, and they do it a lot, judging by how many dogs they have to execute, dogs which are still of young age for goodness sake! Though keeping animals as pets, I think you have slight control over their mating sessions, as you may decide whether they are to do it or not, but normally there are breeders for that, professionals more or less, whom people buy the dogs from. And as I said before, the problem has progressed so far that the variables, as you say, have become many.

Yes, the more pets, the more food there is needed to keep them alive, but the issue I'm trying to address is how come it even got this far? Does not trends and popular belief play part in it? I also don't doubt the price of their rice, as it is high-quality rice;)

Who gave you the right to eat meat? Who gave you the right to go build a house when you're taking over space meant for animals? Who gave you the right to eat your food when it belongs to the ants?

I'm being a little sarcastic here, but you get my point. Again, I'm saying that each and every solution you've thought of, they already have thought of too. They're the government, much more intelligent individuals than internet posters such as you and me.

I think you've misunderstood yet again. Also, I hope I didn't come off as trying to insinuate these people being cannibals, that'd be a gruesome mistake on my end, I apologize.

You're taking me too literally. The 'cannibals' line was just an exaggeration and an attempt to inject humor.

Oh, you mean like what Oprah is doing? Not all Japanese do that. They keep a pet because they love the pet, treat it as family, as nakama (forgive the weeaboo term, but it's the closest I could find), just like most pet owners around the world.

I think they fully know the responsibility of keeping one. Also, what convenience is there to own a pet? I personally find it a waste of time, money, and food. I doubt most people buy a pet since their friends have one.

Yes, they could've limited the age to just the older ones.

No, the trends and popular belief don't come into play with this like you believe. There may be some Japanese breeding pets just for the sake of having one and bragging it to friends, but the same applies to every country. Besides, if the number of pets are too great, it just means Japan is a great country to have pets. Japanese people cherish their pets so much that their numbers have grown too much, and too much of a good thing is bad too. I guess it's karma that they have to suffer.

I doubt those gas chamber guys accept the young ones. They have to have a shred of compassion inside them too lol.

Yes I might be, but I didn't comprehend the comedy at the time, sorry, I think this is quite the serious issue.

Yes, what Oprah or Paris Hilton or whomever is doing, happens more often than what you think it is. Read the article carefully, my summary is very thin. I don't doubt there are people who doesn't love their pets, in whatever country they may live, but in Japan those who don't, are many. (I don't mind any terms;) I use them once in a while as well:p)

I think they fully know the responsibility of keeping one. Also, what convenience is there to own a pet? I personally find it a waste of time, money, and food. I doubt most people buy a pet since their friends have one.

Reading the article, sure, they may know some of the responsibilities, but I fear they're underestimating them a lot, considering how often pets get abandoned. The convenience, as I think they see it, is that pets are 'fun' to have, and having fun is convenient, but the kind of fun they have is deplorable IMO, because of what it entails.

Yes, they could've limited the age to just the older ones.

But they don't, it's because of the black market and all the unregulated breeders.

Idk, the article talks about trends, so I just assumed. Though, it has that many pets because of what I mentioned above, black market and breeders, or at least they play a part in it.

I doubt those gas chamber guys accept the young ones. They have to have a shred of compassion inside them too lol.

Naw, in the article, at least the guy they got to interview, said that at the beginning he was sad, but now he just saw it as his job, the amount of times he's done it has come to dull him.

Not that they have much choice in the matter, but I can't feel that somewhere inside, this has gone too far. Of course, this is not how it looks like all over Japan, but it happens.

As to summarize what the article says; There are now 23 million cats and dogs in Japan, which is more than the number of children. As a result of how many treat dogs and cats, that is as accessories, the government has incorporated so called 'health centres' with 'dream' boxes, which are mechanised gas chambers, more or less, in which the dogs and cats are to spend their last moments, old as well as young.
I think it is better if you read the article, . It'll give you a deeper understanding of the subject, than that given in the summary.

Please share your thoughts and what do you think about people buying pets with such intention?
IMO, this is horrible.
I'm speechless ...
