Japan+Pets=Bad deal for pets.

Not that they have much choice in the matter, but I can't feel that somewhere inside, this has gone too far. Of course, this is not how it looks like all over Japan, but it happens.

As to summarize what the article says; There are now 23 million cats and dogs in Japan, which is more than the number of children. As a result of how many treat dogs and cats, that is as accessories, the government has incorporated so called 'health centres' with 'dream' boxes, which are mechanised gas chambers, more or less, in which the dogs and cats are to spend their last moments, old as well as young.

Yes, but what's almost interesting is, the profound dullness found within some people; buying an animal, then, when they've tired of it, leaving it to these places as if throwing a broken toy.
It's very disturbing.

I have mixed feelings about this. I live in a country where because of the preassure from the Animal Rights groups, goverment isn´t doing anything to stop animals from roaming the cities like in the wilderness. Packs of hungry, wild dogs ( former pets left by their owners ) are running trough the streets attacking, biting and in some occasions even killing people.
Just recently we had a case of a vicious pack of dogs attacking a pregnant woman who ended up in a hospital.

Yes, yes, I agree with all about it being cruel and how they should be treated with love and affection, but as it is not the case here, I wonder, whatever could bring about such cruelty? Mainstream trends/thinking? I mean, there's a picture of Paris Hilton(in a blog I read) almost representing such life-style, not necessarily the throwing them away part, but not far way from it.

I understand what you're trying to say, I have been to a country with such problems myself, even been bitten by a stray dog.
The problem here though, does not encompass problems of that nature, but rather problems emerging through trends. People buying dogs and cats as if they were accessories, and then, because they don't want them any more, throw them away.
The biggest problem being the industry itself, acclimatising to popular trends, breeding certain races of dogs and cats, to only end up having an excess of them.

Should they just auction the pets off for export? I bet they've thought about this and the best solution they could come up with are the mechanized gas chambers. Japan is a good place for pets, heck when I went there I saw a Pet Spa (Spa solely for pets, jacuzzi, parlor, you name it they got it). Even a Pet Birthday Service, they have it. I'm not lying.

However, with the current food shortage Japan has they can't handle the number of animals running around in their country. Their land area being as small as it is, they cannot handle such huge numbers so they have these gas chambers.

So I'm kinda mixed in my decision. Logically it's the right choice, but as a human being with morals it's not right.

i've read that article, and its about china eating babies (or before a baby is born, they are called a fetus.). thats disgusting, horrible & cruel, eating a creation thats the same race as you.

But should cats and dogs, or animals in general fall victim to our selfishness? I think not, it is very cruel and insensitive.

Do you know how we get farmland? We clear forests. You heard that right, humans clear forests for humans to plant crops for eating. It's selfishness but it's necessary for survival. Should the Japanese government favor pets over their own people? I think not.

It's just one of the harsh choices of being in power bro.
