Yeah this pretty much sums it up! If they had higher ambitions in their dreams, why were they never mentioned before? We know Ino always wanted Sasuke and developed a thing for Sai, and Hinata has loved Naruto since forever!

Their dreams weren't just about men but their decreased loved ones being alive. Noticed that Ino's father and Neji were in their dreams.

It's part of the old-fashioned thinking of the Japanese I believe. Throughout the mangas, the females usually serve some purpose for the male characters in this manga rather than trying to help themselves.

But Kishi is kind of mediocre when it comes to developing females so it's to be expected
I don't agree, Kami. Even in ancient stories shortly before the Restoration period in Japan during the reign of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, females had been shown as a significant part of a community; a lot of writers periodically show their respect towards women who were part of samurai families, helped their husbands, and even fought in desperate situations. Shortly before Nobunaga's death, a woman helps him sacrificing her life by finding and giving him arrows.
Toda Mariko from Klavell's 'Shogun ' also fights besides Toranaga.
Their most old- mannered vision about females concerns the leading positions (nowadays too), the per cent of women in managing positions is comparatively low.
+ There are some examples for shonen animes which contradict the thing I stated above, FMAB is a suitable example, mostly with Olivier Armstrong. Besides, a female can be a great character even while in a 'pair' with a male if she manages to stand for herself as an individual at the same time.
What I consider a flaw in Naruto females is that they(a part of them) don't create a strong impression and idea so they remain a part of the background compared to the main line of the story, like a dim colour beside a vivid one.
