It really depends on how well he can use his ninjutsu, just because he invented it and had the ability to control the tailed beast doesn't mean he can use it to its full potential.. He was known as a god due to the fact that he had no match back then.. If we look at what kishi is trying to tell us " the next generation eventually surpasses the last " its true and can be seen in todays society for example : when television was made it was an incredible achievement for technology but over the years it has continually became better and better
( color and now 3D ) this shows how once something is shown, it eventually becomes inferior overtime. It's undenyable that even in the current age of naruto the sages gifts and abilities are still not to be messed with but do we really know how well he can use them?

Don't get me wrong, i definitely think the sage would win he has too much ammo and chakra up his sleeve and from what we've heard about him its not like anyone really knows what techniques and fighting style he uses, this is one of the main reasons legendary people get beaten, although you may be the best if the opposition knows what your next move is before you do it your done for. In the sages case kishi has lead us to believe no one really knows how he used to fight, only his heroics have been passed down through generations.
Itachi is a genious but i have to believe the sage is also.

Plus, didn't the Sharingan derive from the Rinnegan? Granted that the Sharingan can evolve, but is it strong enough to defeat its original form?

This seems massively unfair, even though Itachi is my favorite character and I personally think he is one of the strongest in the manga there is no way he can compare to the host of the ten tail juubi, the person who invented ninjutsu, a man who possessed the Rinnegan and lord only knows what else. just because you create something doesn't mean your going to be the best at it, but i think that it is a lil unfair for someone to go up against the 10 tailed jinchuurkiri.

This is just silly. Itachi kicks ass, but not to the extent of having greater ocular power than the most powerful eyes in Naruto world. He has no control over life and death, no gravity control, etc. Fighting So6P for Itachi is like fighting all 7 paths of Pain united in one body, so they don't depend on each other as much. Finally, strength to take control of a tailed beast that had the combined power of 9 separate beasts. How is comparison even possible? REALLY? I mean, that's a lot of physical strength at the very least. Basically, the power of Madara and Hashirama or Naruto and Sasuke in one body and you might just have something remotely close to So6P. As silly as it is, it is the way things are. Itachi is only one half of what the Sage is.
