His two main goals were to protect Sasuke from harm and to protect Konoha. He did both.
Danzo would have killed Sasuke when he was a child if not for Itachi's threat to leak info on Konoha. Orochimaru would have taken over Sasuke's body eventually (chakra exhaustion would have led to a takeover) if not for Itachi freeing Sasuke of him and that wretched cursed seal.
Not to mention the fact that Itachi transferred his ms powers to Sasuke, giving him survival tools that came in pretty handy throughout his journey.
While he was alive, Itachi's mere presence in akatsuki shook fear into the likes of Obito and Nagato. Neither party attacked the village until he died and his disposal of the Uchiha clan was a necessary evil. Otherwise baby Naruto would have probably got fried by a katon during the Uchiha coup.
Itachi's solo of Kabuto led to the edo tensei being stopped and swung the war in the favor of the alliance. He didn't just protect Konoha, he protected the shinobi world.
If Itachi's a failure, I don't know what to call the other characters in this manga.
Naruto: Wanted to bring Sasuke back to the village. Failed. Wanted to achieve "true" peace yet the shinobi/village system still exists. Small children are still training to become assassins. Another failure.
Kakashi: Responsible for one friend's death and the other's descent into madness. Couldn't prevent one of his students from becoming a rogue ninja and negelected the other two. Fodderized by nearly everyone he fought in the manga and admitted he was useless in the war arc.
Obito: Pedo failure that couldn't even carry out his plan to destroy the world successfully. Talk no jutsu'd by an aryan sociopath with a jesus complex.
Madara: This guy was just a pawn. He was manipulated into believing that IT was the meaning of life and he couldn't even stay alive long enough to see his fake dream come to fruition.
