is it me or are the ANBU useless?

ANBU is not useless.
They are assigned to do specific things that Jounins and other shinobi rank are not allowed or unable to do.
ANBU is used for assasination, killing a specific target.
ANBU are Kage's personal guard(s).
ANBU only answer to the Kage (Hokage) and no one else.
Itachi was ANBU and he has more than one jutsu.
Kakashi was ANBU and he has 1000+ jutsu.
Yamato is ANBU and he has many jutsu.
Therefore, ANBU is not useless.

people have got it all wrong, the main and side characters like kakashi,itachi,sai or yamato make the anbu look good not the other way around
I kinda feel sorry for the guys; I mean, the only time we really see them is when a major villain appears. You don't expect a random ANBU to save the day, do you? Of course they are going to be beat and appear useless.
From what we've actually read or watched, ANBU can be considered useless. However, since they aren't meant to be regular characters seen in every episode, obviously we aren't ever going to get to see a montage of clips from all the times they've actually been successful. I'm sure they fare just fine against run of the mill chunin level rogue ninja or Rain Village ninja, etc. However, when people like Hiruzen, Kakashi, Asuma and Jiraiya are no match for some of the really powerful ninja that we see threatening the safety of the village during the series, I think the ANBU can be forgiven for getting pounded by some of the same enemies.
