I don't get it who is stronger, Hiruzen or Hashirama.

It was a complete retcon. Hiruzen was the longest standing Hokage therefore more people knew of his power. Hashirama is undoubtedly stronger by miles but the people who know of his power (Mainly Madara and any elder who lived in his era) know he is the most powerful.

Hold on, you guys are thinking WAY to deep about this. Hiruzen himself is strong, but just because someone said prime doesn't mean he mean't the top of ALL. Hiruzen was defiantly a prime of the new generation, but he died early in the new generation so gg to that lol.

Iruka said he was said to be the strongest of all the hokages in his prime.

I'd say Hashirama. Only the oldbie shinobis would know of his power though.

Didn't they all state that Hiruzen was the strongest Shinobi in the Leaf at his time and that he was the strongest in his era? Hiruzen's era would simply mean the Era in between Hashirama Senju and Minato Namikaze, the 1st and 4th Hokage. That means out of Hiruzen and Tobirama, Hiruzen was the stronger one. They also stated that Hiruzen got the nickname God of Shinobi because of his strength, but that was years after Hashirama's death and its also stated that most believed that the stories about Hashirama's strength was mere legends and stories people had made up. If they all though that the stories about how strong Hashirama was when its only natural that they would say that Hiruzen was the strongest Hokage ever since they only knew about the power of 3 Hokgae's.

Minato, Hiruzen and Tobirama. They might have only stated that Hirzuen was the strongest of the 3 in his prime, which makes sense since the apprentice will always surpass the master and Minato died before he could reach his prime. I highly doubt Kishi though about it before he made it, but it can be turned around to make a decent amount of sense if you think about it.

I also saw the statement that Minato during the attack on the Nine-Tails was barely able to transport a Bijuu Bomb from Kurmama while in the war he was able to transport the gigantic one from the Juubi without trouble, the reason for this is because he is a Edo. Since he is a Edo Tensei, Minato doesn't suffer from losing chakra like he did under the attack on the Nine Tails.

At the beginning of the series the Naruto universe wasn't very developped and Hiruzen/Orochimaru were the strongest shinobi around. Hashirama and Tobirama were just old shinobi without much background story.

Then with Shippuden, quite a few things changed.

Kishimoto is an excellent manga-ka. However, he wasn't prepared for creating Naruto Shippuden and some plot holes have been created. Hiruzen could still be the strongest Hokage, but I doubt it. It is most likely that Hashirama is the strongest and Iruka was just giving the Hokage hype.

Probably Hashirama based on the latest chapters. Prime Hiruzen is surrounded by too much mystery... We have actual feats from Hashirama to back his hype.

I swear sometimes I feel the manga is too good for its readers.

Izuka is the third is "said" to be the strongest hokage.

That means the people of the time haven't seen a hokage stronger. but guess what hasihrama was in the village in early stages and few people have seen his power.

I think its better to note what the third hokage said about hasihrama in their battle that his powers are still very good.

Hiruzen was/is the strongest Hokage in part 1. Then Kishi changed his mind, made some correction, so that it was possible for Hashirama to be stronger. It's cause he didn't think that far ahead, when he was writing part 1. Only Oda is that skilled ;)

Its just 1 big plot hole...

here's another 1 :

Minato let the kyuubi Tbb crush konoha and then have a hard time teleporting it.

War edo minato : Teleport a TBB in an instant and ask if he is late

Minato has unlimited chakra as an Edo, and who said he had a hard time teleporting it?

He doesn't look fatigued at all teleporting the Kyuubi TBB.

I think it was stated by Enma (The Monkey King summon) that Hiruzen's age had caught up with him during his fight against Orochimaru and edo Hashi+Tobi. It is claimed that Hiruzen in his prime was the strongest of all Hokage (Chapter 94 pg 12) and (chapter 121 pg 3).

Now here's Hiruzen's highlights:

Trained by Tobirama and Hashirama
Contract with Enma (paralell to the legendary Monkey King)
Death Reaper Jutsu
Itachi personally went to him to ask that Sasuke would be protected
Sensei of Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru
Superb elemental jutsus; fire and earth
Great knowledge of history and wisdom

In conclusion, I think it's unfair to judge him because we never got to see him at his prime. For all we know, he would have known Hashi and Tobi's weaknesses because they are his senseis, or simply could have used the death reaper seal and kill anyone for that matter. However, to answer your question, Hashirama is regarded as the 'God of all Shinobi' and with the evidence that we have seen I think it's fair to say that he is the strongest of all hokage
