Around 70 years ago, radiation and chemotherapy were used to treat cancer in a blind way, messing up people's bodies and always leaving them feeling much worse than before treatment. Some were indeed 'cured' for a while, but the cancer reappeared. Simply put, they did not understand cancer at all.

A few years later, they observed how a specific type, lung cancer, was dramatically increasing among the population. They tried the same methods to 'cure' it, largely unsuccessfully, untill they realized the correlation between the environment(smoking habits developed during that period of time) and the cancer increase.

More studies were performed and the correlation became even stronger. Once they more fully understood that and managed to reduce smoking among the population(following a strong fight with the money-motivated industries that produced and marketed cigarettes), the prevalence of lung cancer dropped among the people.

They had uncovered an enviromental causation for a particular cancer and, instead of relying on historically ineffective methods of killing cancer inside people's bodies, they prevented it from happening in the first place by reducing smoking among people.

It is thought that such 'cancer prevention' approaches will save far more lives than cancer treatments. So prevention is very strongly preferred over treatment.

Today there are warning labels on all cigarettes to increase awareness, this is one example of the many environmental causes for much of our problems today. The root problem stems from greed and corruption.

However, we can change these circumstances if we stay vigilante.

- "How to beat cancer?"
- "Don't get sick in the first place".

Wow, I've never seen a well-conceived thread with so many facts in my life.
Fun to the side, the real way to beat cancer and other cruel diseases, is to invest into science and research, instead of wasting so fuqing much money for wars and military. Also people from all over the world have to work hand in hand.

I was coming to this thread expecting the answer to how to beat any cancer and any disease and here you talk of the cessation of the abuse of tobacco. That doesn't stop cancers that arise from alcohol, obesity, drug induced diseases and cancers, and genetically prone incidences. You disappoint me.

I gave a historical fact about what works and what doesn't. There is no greater investment than your own health, don't get sick in the first place is the best advice there is. I'm not saying that if you do get sick to abandon all hope, I'm telling you to be more mindful of your actions because believe it or not, they have consequences.

But you do know that people with a totally healthy lifestyle get cancer too, don't you?
You can't avoid these diseases by just being careful, wtf.

The cause in those instances are outside factors out of our control. For example, you can be a perfect driver and still get into a car accident, why? Because other people ****ed up, in the same way you have no control over something like cigarettes that were marketed but were found to not only be addictive but lethal.

Again, the root problem stems from greed and corruption whether we're talking about fossil fuel, animal-agriculture or even the pharmaceutical industry. In a system where profit comes before sustainability and health you can't hope to ever truly cure cancer or any disease, because it's much more profitable to keep patients coming and give treatments.

It's like Chris Rock said: There is no money in a cure, there is money in the medicine, that's why they want you to live with it.

Sorry to disappoint you. The way to stop those cancers is to stop what you just described. Finding the source is the first step towards a solution, then you need to create new incentives. You won't stop the fast food industry that produces junk food for example, why? Because they want to profit. We need to abolish the monetary system if we ever want a long term solution or 'cure' to anything.

Prevention is better than cure but there's no guarantee (or anything close) that you won't get cancer. You can only decrease the likelihood of a mutation occurring.

1. Everyone has a genetic predisposition to cancer regardless of manual or secondary actions. Saying anything otherwise is ignorant; research what you wish to discuss about before talking about it.

2. Even if people were to take the utmost care of their health, there are people who are just genetically unable to prevent disease, or do not have strong enough defenses to prevent disease. Should we wag our fingers at them despite that?

3. The pharmaceutical industry loves to make profit off the hard work of scientists, but that does not mean we shouldn't invest money into research. Not investing money into research because an industry will take advantage of it and make money off their discoveries is a pretty stupid concept, and I've had to put up with slimreaper several times.

4. We've found cures to diseases in the past and they are free to be vaccinated. You know, because people got tired of being lectured to stop being sick, so we put our heads together and figured out how to cure it. But we might as well halt research grants anyway. Quod erat Demonstrandum.

To your first point, only 5 to 10% of breast cancer is thought to be hereditary so you're wrong. Quite ironic you tell me to do research while spewing crap that is blatantly false, also not everyone who has the gene develops breast cancer in their lifetime. Predisposition doesn't mean predetermination.

Second point comes from your lack of reading comprehension. If you notice, I never refuted Konan's point about healthy people getting cancer anyway. It's because I agree that there are certain things outside our control and we should help people to the best of our ability regardless.

Third point, in a 2013 study it was revealed Big Pharma spent $98.3B on sales and marketing but only $65.8B on research and development. I state this to drill in the fact that healthcare is first and foremost a business and the number one priority of a business is to make profit. For that reason, medicine that mask symptoms and treatments are the best practices for making money. That way, you get repeat customer and more money. They never promote alternative solutions that can't be patented that don't require you to spend a fortune. Case in point, the incentive for a cure is subpar, the system itself needs to change if you ever hope to see real cures that people can take and move on with their lives. Occasionally there might be a 'cure' but it comes with strings attached which brings us to...

Point four, you mentioned there are free vaccines, free for who? There are billions of children in developing countries dying from a list of diseases because they neither have vaccine nor access to any relevant health services. There are also things like the cure to hepatitis C in the US that cost a fortune for the average person to get a full treatment of the drugs involved.

1. So in other words you try to counter my point that everyone is genetically predisposed to cancer by: not only providing only one type of cancer, but said one type of cancer already has 5-10% genetic predisposition. You do realize there are many different types of cancer, right? You didn't get that far in your understanding of cancer, huh?

No, I do not "spew crap that is blatantly false". Everything so far has been out of Biology textbooks that professors teach university students in order to become accomplished scientists. They would never teach us material that would directly hinder scientific progress. Think on this. Would I actually intentionally feed you and others false information about disease and cancer? Do I actually have an ulterior motive on this?

3. So despite the 67.9% of funding going to Research, we should overlook Big Pharma's efforts and completely stop the industry? Because I realize Big Pharma can be a corporate *******, but it's not a complete corporate *******. That title goes to Koch Industries. Koch Industries likes to spend money against scientists' 99% acknowledgement of a certain environmental phenomenon that would make them lose sales were government to act, unlike Big Pharma which uses their research money to understand more about disease and immunity. Think how much money that went into that research. Now think how modern medicine would turn out if there was no scientific research granted. That's right, we would be worse off as a society, costs or no costs.

4. Said free vaccines are free for citizens and free for US and First-World vaccines exported to said third-world countries, like Tetanus Pertussis. Some countries do not want First-World medicine because they are skeptical of our doctors and their "ulterior motives" to vaccinating third-world citizens.

It's really, really not that hard to research. You should really try and understand information even if it goes against your preconceived belief. Yeah, Big Pharma is a nasty industry, but it also does good too. NOBODY should have the thought of shutting down research just because of the industry that funds it. It is backwards thinking
