Hiruzen only lost because of CIS

Honestly, looking at the current Edo Tensei I'd say it was Plot No jutsu he managed to seal them at all.

He fought the strongest ''mortal'' in Narutoverse and won. Hiruzen -WON-. He didn't lose. He sealed 3 Hokages ( including himself ) making it impossible ( until Kishi screwed it ) for them to be resurrected, while also disabling Orochimaru.

For an old guy that got ambushed and had no prep, that was pretty damn good.

But no, what he did was the max. attainable. Orochimaru stabbing him sealed the deal.

CIS and PIS was on both sides. The fact the had to fight is such a small area made it impossible for Hashirama to perform the jutsus he was capable of. I also think Hashirama can't do what Madara has shown to do because of infinite chakra, but many disagree with that. CIS was placed on Hashirama mostly out the other 2 on that side, but it wasn't as bad as Hiruzen as for reasons you have stated. PIS is why Orochimaru won. The 3rd was meant to die and make Orochi weaker for future events, like Saskue killing him. Everything else that happened can be said to have a part in it, but it was for the plot.

Hiruzen is one of my favorite bad ass old guys, and what he did was amazing for his age. The only one to top him is White Beard from One Piece.
