OK. I will tell you why Hiruzen is powerful.
Anyone who is trusted by Hashirama and Tobirama to protect the village during the wars is bound to be powerful. It's common sense that he is worthy of the title Hokage since it was given to him by 2 monsters of Hokages. Learning the skills and knowledge from the 1st and 2nd, Hiruzen was able to get the village through 3 Great Shinobi World Wars. Having the longest reign of Hokage. 40+ Years.

Hiruzen has also shown the ability to discern which technique a person intends to use after observing the hand seals which gives Hiruzen the ability to come up with a proper counter measure for the technique before it's released.

This kind of knowledge makes him an extremely versatile ninja who is capable of countering almost anything thrown at him.

His intelligence is amazing as he is able to deduce Obito's mysterious substance only moments after witnessing it, stating that it was similar to the kekkei tōta but the attack's shape is dynamic, so it can be used offensively and defensively, and that it is even beyond kekkei tōta. The misconception here is that this was Hiruzen's best attack against Obito when clearly all he meant to was analyze his offensive attacks. Sasuke even notes this.

His expertise in close quarter combat is excellent because literally after sealing parts of his soul away in the Reaper and using up almost all his Chakra, Hiruzen was able to easily disarm the Kusanagi Blade from Orochimaru and catch him in close range.

Despite many not agreeing with me, Hiruzen has made himself very relevant in the recent chapter due to being the last Edo Hokage standing and being the only one defending the Shinobi Alliance with the 5 Kage.

Kishi will make him play an important role. He must have realized that he kept Hiruzen in the dark for too long and decided to take out the other Hokage out of the battle so he can have his moment.
