This might sound random, but I think Hiruzen can use Rashomon gates.

Here's a little theory...

Hashirama can use it (Hiruzen's teacher)
Orochimaru can use it (Hiruzen's student)
Sakon and Udon can use it (Orochimaru's student)

Hiruzen fits in quite neatly between Hashirama and Orochimaru, and given his hype for knowing many techniques I'd be surprised if he didn't know the technique.

This just speculation, but if Hiruzen could stop a tailed beast bomb I imagine he'd use Rashomon gates to do so.

And Tobirama killed Madara's brother, who was close to him in strength. Seeing as only Hashirama could defeat Madara, that gives Tobirama some props. That's my point, if you still don't understand I can try and simplify an already simple point for you.

Nah, Minato is the 2nd strongest. If Hiruzen had good jutsu, he'd have used it against Orochimaru. Just because he's old doesn't mean that his jutsu was weaker. His stamina would be affect greater though. He has no counter for FTG.

One more thing that proves my point. Jiraya (who taught Minato) stated that he was the most talented shinobi he knew. He was also Hiruzen's student. Since he knew both, it's easy to assume he knows full well which each is capable of. He probably knew Hiruzen in his prime too.

The was part 1, power scale was completely different. SureMinato had the potential but he fell short, not doubting his talent but he can't hang with the 3rd in his prime.

I feel the need to express that when Tobirama killed Izuna I doubt it was 1 on 1, seeing as there were constant wars back then, not organized missions and platoons necessarily.

As for the 2nd vs the 3rd, I'd assume the 3rd takes it because of multiple chakra natures, allowing him to counter more. Although it's hard to counter FTG, which the 2nd can just use out of thing air without seals? Plus there is that whole cheesy saying that the next generation always surpasses the next, which some what holds true.

Edit: Oh, and about the 3rd knowing FTG, it could be possible I guess, but my only question is why the hell didn't he use it then?
