Ok well it is less a movie more of a mini series but you could watch it in a relatively short amount of time. It is called 'The Tenth Kingdom' and I think it is what you are looking for. I personally loved it. You should look it up.
Some other good ones are 'Merlin', with Kevin Costner, though I think that was also a mini series come to think of it.
Spirited away doesn't really have swords but it is an awesome Anime/Fantasy that is good.
You could always watch the 'Princess Bride' though you have probably seen it. It has good swordfights and is funny though.
'Big Fish' is an awesome movie though there is no swordplay. It is fantasy though.
Well also 'Highlander' is an option, not a good option, but still.
"Time Bandits" is a classic fantasy combined with sci-fi film.
Labyrinth is pretty good with David Bowie.
Oh and "Beowulf is purely fantasy and action.

It is but it seemed so obvious that I assumed he would have watched it. In my post I was trying to go for less well known fantasy stuff.
But yeah LoTR is the greatest.
