Thought I was gonna flunk out of college freshman year due to being a dumbo, but never thought about dropping out though. Harder to get the good jobs if you don't have that diploma. Most employers care a lot about that slip of paper. (Not that my field or major rakes in bucks, mind you.)

That being said, college ain't for everyone. Weigh your financial situation and what you want from life and then decide. Maybe get your basics out of the way at a community college first to see if you like it, but at a much cheaper price, before moving onto university. If you decide to, find one with an environment you like, maybe one you have some friends at, and at the very least you'll have fun and hopefully learn some cool 'n useful concepts.

Don't drop out of high school. Don't. That looks bad as hell and that junk is too easy to justify dropping out. Just stick with it and move onto better things from there.

I took college classes two years ago, dropped out. Main reason being was because of Family Obligations. But now, with what I want to do in life, I don't need college. Sure, it may help, but I won't need it. I'm considering going to college to get a degree for a fall back plan. Only thing is, I'd have to get a Masters. Bachelors nowadays are so common, that it's pretty much nothing.

Has anyone here ever taught of dropping out of high school or college or did anyone drop out? If so why and what were the challanges you faced? Did you dropout to pursue a passion eg music dancing etc?
Why do you ask this? Is it because you are considering dropping out?

Anyways, I DID drop out of college.

What I did is I went to a community college in a completely different city. I got a job and usually got off work around 1230-1am.

At first I was fine. But in my second semester, it began to take its toll. I just wasnt able to have the will to get up to my alarm. Eventually it got to the point, where I would sleep through my alarms entirely(as in literally not be woken up at all), all 4-6 of them. Then by the time I got to spring break, there was just nothing I could do. I literally had missed too many classes, for me to have any chance at all of passing.(at least with my self discipline being as poor as it was then). So I just quit. There was just no reason for me to continue at this point.

Probably the only reason I quit though, was for 3 things. 1. My self discipline became complete crap. 2. I was taking general college classes, and had absolutely zero idea what I wanted to major in. 3. College unlike highschool, you can just go back any time, and finish without any ill effects. Also college is not mandatory to get a decent job. Only for a good career.

The only reason at all, that I quit, instead of going to the teachers and working something out, is because I knew I did not have the self discipline to follow through.

And to further explain my situation, it wasnt even like I was struggling very hard in college classes. It was literally poor self discipline(over sleeping), and zero motivation(due to having no idea of a direction to move in) that caused me to have bad attendance(not intentionally).

Also in high school, I easily, with minimal effort got honor roll. I wouldve gotten star roll, if I simply did not procrastinate on homework. Or if I simply studied(I rarely did so). I did all this while taking honors and AP classes, as I was able to. I got a 26 on the ACT the first and only time I took it in my junior year of high school(and yep I didnt study), and I scored in the 93rd percentile on the ASVAB(a military qualifications test(the score means that I qualify for pretty much any job I would want, If I joined the Armed forces(army navy etc).
Of those who took the ASVAB(a large amount of my class), I do not know of anyone who scored higher than me at my school.

So the point of all this is to show, that it wasnt like im a dimwit or anything. I wasnt really a slacker either. I just had some bad habits that I did not discipline myself to eliminate before they became problems.

I do not regret my decision to drop out that much. However I greatly regret that I did not put the effort into doing what needed to be done regardless of how little I felt like doing it. If I were once again in the same or a similar scenario, I would not drop out again. I would go talk to the teachers, and do what I could to get credits on the courses. I would not just quit.

My advice though is simply dont quit. You have spent most of your life in school. It would be a waste to just stop now after you have come so far. You might as well just finish the race, and get it over with.

I definately think you should at least finish High School. I would never drop out of high school no matter what.

If you have any questions, or would like to further this discussion, please just sent me a PM.

that's an interesting ordeal cptenn94.

let's break this down a little further; from society's standpoint you have two roads that can work independently and/or can be mutually inclusive as the horizons start to broaden. those two roads would be post-secondary education, and not. typically those who do not venture into the world of post-secondary life have a specific skill-set they are attempted to administer in their day-to-day work. be it a talent in the arts, being a great speaker, or focusing on jobs that can done through other non-conventional methods like welding, and even civic duties. with that being said, the ability to drop out of college can in fact be a wiser choice for those who are not so good at figuring out where they want to take things.

now, i want to bring forth a specific question: are we sending kids off to university too early? the fact that kids are supposed to choose at ages like 17 what career paths they're going to be taking is something i always found perplexing. really makes the broadest of scopes seem like the education system is mostly trying to spit out everyday men who can fit into timely slots rather than fully equip them for abilities they can hone later on in life.

i really feel that's what adds to one dropping out as much as other factors in life. you have kids taking liberal arts courses with no aims to go to law school later on which is just saddening to me.

now cp's situation is not really relevant to that, just thought i'd chime in.

I used to think about it, but it was ultimately getting to me and i couldn't settle down, eventually i got suspended for bad grades, took a semester off to settle myself, though i had some other life problems that added to it, the point is you shouldn't dropout especially if you can help it, sometimes you might not just have found what you ought to be doing

Education is different from having knowledge. The type of education we learn is school is informal. There is so much empahis nowadays to go to school and that not going makes you a quiter or less human.

education institutions can't really survive unless there is some type of social stigma attached to not being in them. it's understandable that they exist if you think about it.

I might have not gotten the relevance of some things I lear at school with life, but I don't think that I'd ever be able to just drop my education.

No not really. Although Biology has made me question my entire educational road so far, and my overall "intelligence"......
I'm in Biology too and can't help feeling the same way sometimes...
But now that we finally started the lessons I always wanted to do I feel quite a bit better *_*

Well the whole aspect kind of turned me off, I felt like I was paying a shit load of money to not really learn anything mind blowing. Then if I did graduate I'd have to pay even more money to pay back the money I borrowed. And now it's the standard to have a college degree, if everyone has one you aren't at really at any more of an advantage than others when looking for a job.

Plus everyone I've ever worked with went to college or had a degree in something. My first job was delivering lunches and every other driver there had degrees. One even had a masters in education but had to work two jobs to pay off his student loans. It just didn't seem like the route for me.
That's how I feel, amongst other things. But if everyone has a degree nowadays, wouldn't you be at a disadvantage now?
