OR you can make it rise up behind/beneath your opponent, binding him in place.

Yes, good. Now a add on which you can use, when getting close to the opponent with the wave. Use shape manipulation and form the upper part of the wave into a spike which you then harden with your earth chakra.

Using your earth chakra, take the properties of earth and create a strong resitant, yet thin layer of stone around your body. It doesn't neccesarily slow you much down, as it will bend with your movements. Obviously, you have to keep channeling chakra into it.

I don't know how you got Jiroubo into the picture. Kakuzu's the only one been seen doing this technique.
