Yes it can as long as the wood isn't made from the users body itself (out of their cells).
So you're saying if Hashirama sprouted wood from himself, Preta wouldn't be able to absorb it?

It would absorb the chakra out of the tree, but the tree would still be hitting him with enough force to kill or extremely injure him.
Lol it sounds silly to kill or extremely injure a shinobi with a tree but it's definitely proven possible as we can see with Tsunade.

Doubt it. That's like saying it'd absorb the houses Yamato built.
It's a little different than that. In that situation, Yamato is making stationary objects for the purpose of rebuilding. I'm talking in a situation to where if Preta Path would come across Mokuton in a battle situation. I see what you're getting at though.

Remember chakra created things can be absorbed not just drained, Jiraiya's boiling oil wave was absorbed and not just the chakra in it but physically gone afterwards. So it should be possible for him to absorb the wood while he is still growing and adding chakra to it but afterwards it'll just be a tree so unable to be absorbed.
Forgot about that. But if that's the case then why wouldn't the whole tree be absorbed? Also, what about the fact that the boiling oil wave was not alive as opposed to a tree which is considered a living thing, do you think that changes anything?

Mokuton is ranked as a Ninjutsu (KKG). Preta path absorbs any ninjtusu. Moktuon contains Yin Chakra/Energy which gives it it's maneuverability... If Natural Energy/Chakra then this can be absorbed also.

What do you think would happen to the trees after it would get absorbed? Do the trees get sucked up or do they just stop moving? I agree that it's chakra that gives it its maneuverability but what about the fact the Hashi is also using the life energy of the trees, do you think that changes anything?

Yes, some Mokuton techniques (like wood clone techniques) are made from the users cells. They cant be absorbed. But other Mokuton techniques which are formed by chakra only can be.

I think I get what you're saying.
Hmm, why would the one's that come from the user's cells would be different though? The way I view Mokuton is that the user exerts their chakra to create trees or accelerate the growth of trees by tapping into the life energy of plants or whatever he uses to create these trees or to make some type of wood from himself (like a Mokuton shield or spear). It may be flawed but with this, I would think Preta path wouldn't work because Hashi uses the energy of the living things around him, and living things certainly can't be absorbed by Preta. The flaw with this is that Preta absorbs ninjutsu which is a category Mokuton falls under. So tell me, why would the one's that come from the user's cells would be different?

only if it has his chakra in it, the technique absorbs chakra and while the trees are being used in attacks they are being fueled with chakra so it'll devour the chakra and tree. The trees are alive but still full of his chakra being the source of life in it so in theory it's no different then other ninjutsu.

Because cells cant be absorbed since they aren't chakra born.

Forget what everyone is saying, the user obviously doesn't make real life trees since you need a seed which contains an embryo to grow a real life tree. What Hashirama does is simply mould and convert the chakra into wood (when making ninjutsu, you are simply moulding and manipulating the chakra to copy the properties of that element, meaning the whole wood is chakra and the whole jutsu can be absorbed, not just the chakra inside as some people are stating). Then Hashirama adds Yang energy to it to give it life like properties, meaning it can grow plants etc. However, adding Yang to it still doesn't stop it from still being chakra. Chakra is just a moulding tool in which you can mould and mimic the properties of near enough anything you want out of it. Proof? Look at the 9 tailed beasts. They were born from the chakra of the 10 tails but giving life to through the use of yang energy by the Sage of the Six paths. But does this stop them from being chakra monsters? Which is why they cant die, and why when Minato used the Death God on the Kyuubi, it simply sealed half of its power and shrunk in size (instead of sealing a soul like its supposed to).

I believe it can I made a thread on it a while back.

First of all here's how the author describes petra path in the databooks.

You must be registered for see images

Ninjutsu can be split into two categories. The first would be ninjutsu created from the users chakra such as rasengan or susanoo. The second catagory would be manipulating an existing object like Gaara's sand or puppets.

In the first catagory we've seen it absorbs the technique no problem, Nagato absorbing a rasengan. In the second catagory we've seen the chakra absorbed out of what's being manipulated such as when Madara used petra path whilst being held by Gaara's sand the sand just fell, that's because the sand isn't the nijutsu but the chakra manipulating the sand is.

The category I think mokuton falls under would be the first. This is because it's created from the user, I also think it's unlikely that there were . Also it's just which are the tree's lifeforce. If it's tree manipulation only the chakra gets absorbed and the tree would most likely wither away.

Common reason why it's believed mokuton can't be absorbed:

  • It's actual trees and not just pure chakra.
  • It's a solid.
  • The trees have yang chakra.

Petra path isn't restricted to absorbing pure chakra. We've seen it absorb which was converted from chakra just like Hashirama's mokuton is converted from chakra. It's not a petra path feat but Kisame's sword works the same way shown how it There's also the but that's not clear.

It's sometimes argued that it can't absorb solids. However is a solid ball of chakra and was absorbed with no problems.

Finally yang chakra, I've noticed most agree that Naruto's chakra cloak is absorbable even though it consists of yang chakra why is mokuton different? I don't think this is where petra paths limit is, it's able to absorb random things such as Naruto's sage energy as well as . Nagato absorbed which should consist of both yang and yin chakra as bijuu's are chakra beasts made of both types. This could be a possible explanation of how Nagato regained his youthfulness after.

Overall, both the manga pages and the databook point towards petra path being able to absorb mokuton.

I'm not sure if I missed anything but are there any pages of petra path being used and failing to absorb a ninjutsu?

Of course not, there is no Mokuton technique that can be absorbed as they are indeed real trees. Started from the fact, that only Hashiramas special body allowed him to use the Mokuton, the databook petty well explains that Mokuton is not simply a convertion of Chakra into a form, every Mokuton technique, apart those who are used through the body, are used by converting Chakra into a source of life from where those trees growth can be stimulated. Furthermore, all techniques are based on the principle of Hashiramas DNA.

If you deny that preta can absorb the tree itself, then you should know that hashirama still passes chakra THROUGH the trees to control them.... any moukuton that gets near Nagato would be drained of the chakra controlling it.. just as gaara's sand was drained of the chakra controlling it

lol, the Mokuton that gets near Nagato will crush him to paste, what are you talk about. That picture doesn't imply that Madara sucked up Chakra in Gaaras sand, nor Gaara admitted that, he could just have stopped his sand. Using his hand, he created a barrier to absorb the Rasenshuriken only. Otherwise we could assume that Madara would have absorbed the Mokuton he stood at when absorbing Oonokis Jinton. That's basically an interpretation of yours you want to tell us. The databook above clarifies, that the Mokuton is not just a material made of chakra or controlled by it by letting Chakra flowing through the trees. How often has this been discussed, your argumentation is far from being logical. Hashirama is creating a whole forest in an instant that is covering the whole landscape and is yet negated by Nagatos Preta Path. Stay rationally, that is even for Manga conditions totally absurd. But ok, maybe Itachi slaughters Juubi with one swing of Totsukas sword, as it appears to be the ultimately offensive weapon, who knows.

Did you not understand what I said? any moukouton that gets in the vicinity of nagato/ preta path will automatically stop moving, as CHAKRA is used to control it...
And why would gaara release his restraints? have you even seen him just drop his sand for no reason?

I'm not retard, I understand what you want to tell me :-D.

Hashirama is not controlling the Mokuton by letting Chakra flowing through the trees, in fact that all happens in the ground, Hashirama converts his Chaka there in a source of life and accelerates their growth from there, he creates real trees, real life forces, you need to understand this. Unfortunately, the page of viz clear ups with all those pages about the databook was removed, but in fact, the Mokuton is based on Hashiramas DNA, real trees are created from one single source of Chakra and are controlled by their very origin, not by letting his Chakra flow through the whole forest.

Anyway, physical objects would have to be touched, in order to absorb their Chakra; so Nagato needed to tank Bees Lariat first and Naruto had to be hold, in order to absorb his Chakra, as the barrier merely keeps away Chakra.

Ah, and I'm wondering why Madara didn't just absorb the sands chakra any time Gaara wanted to bury him. Gaaras sand hold Madara for the only purpose to make him a perfect target for the Rasenshuriken; as the Rasenshuriken failed, there was no need to hold his arm anymore.

Stop this pity, recent chapters made both Hiruzen and Nagato out to be trash compared to legends like Madara and Hashirama, acknowledge what power level those characters had, it is clear as day that your assumption is from a mere world of fantasy. Every Mokuton that gets near Nagato will get negated, common, you are supposed to be a quite good debater by some people, so don't be ridiculous.

I don't think so. I believe Mokuton and Amaterasu are the only two ninjutsus' Nagato won't be able to absorb. First, whilst Hashirama does inject chakra to control wood, it's still subject to complete Physical manifestation and sprouts at an alarming rate. It sprouts up from the ground like a plant/tree, and displays an abnormally accelerated growth at Hashirama's whim. The latter eats through chakra, and I can't see how it would get absorbed at the chakra barrier created by Petra Path to absorb Ninjutsu.

I disagree on both of these. If we take everything databook says literally, then a single Amaterasu should wipe out the whole planet including Sasuke as it's supposed to be hotter than the surface of the sun and should only be used as a Kamikaze technique to take everyone and everything out on the entire planet. Even a tiny Enton should turn everything into a burnt English Muffin.

I think it's a misconception that when the Mokuton user converts his chakra to earth and water he no longer gives a continuous flow of chakra to the trees to wield them, it is true that they remain as trees after they are used in combat, but to wield them and control them like having the vines restrain or launch at someone requires a direct flow of chakra from the mokuton user, so if preta path was used simultaneously with the launch of the Mokuton attack the chakra would still be absorbed.

God knows what Hiruzen has to do with this argument
.
Databook 2 - Mokuton: Jukai Koutan:
NINJUTSU; Arcane; Mokuton Hijutsu: Jukai Koutan (Wood Release Arcane Art: Boundless, Proliferating Woodland Realm Genesis*)
User: Shodai Hokage
Offensive; Defensive; Supplementary; Close, Medium, Long ranges, Rank: none

Main text

A technique developed by Shodai Hokage, founder of the Hidden Leaf village, and a surrealist Mokuton ninjutsu so excessively difficult no one besides the man himself has ever acquired it. By generating chakra, he maneuvers it as he sees fit for attack and defense; and furthermore, this omnipotent jutsu even allows him to capture the enemy at the same time. Even stating the Hidden Leaf village wouldn't have been established without this jutsu wouldn't be an exaggeration.

Caption

-The furious, boundless realm of vegetation* appears, splitting the earth apart!! Those who set foot into it can forget about escaping!!

Picture comment

-With their tremendous life force, the trees pierce through the wall of mud, and extend their branches at their prey in an instant!!

Konoha Hundred Leaves Collection

Main text

There are multiple categories of ninjutsu, such as Suiton and Doton, but essentially, whether those techniques may or may not be activated is influenced by the terrain, and using Suiton someplace where there is no water is nearly impossible. Only shinobi with Hokage-class levels of mastery may free themselves from this law of Nature.

Caption

Picture comment

-This hijutsu is a legend among legends. There's no one in Konoha who doesn't know about it.
*Written normally, "Jukai"="broad expanse of dense woodland". The spelling was altered to add the "realm" meaning. "Koutan" means "Nativity", or refers to birth in a royal lineage.

Using Chakra, moukouton is controlled , if chakra based abilities get near preta path's bubble, it's completely drained
