[Discussion] Do you believe torture is ever justifiable?

I'd like to hear what you guys think, and why you believe what you do.

Yes, but there is a limit to the amount I would deem justifiable. (like cutting someone's junk off, I would never ever think that is justifiable.)

Huh never thought about this much. I suppose for vital information that could save lives, then yes. For example, I think torturing a terrorist to get the location of a bomb, or the details of an attack, etc. is justified.

I would say bullshit, because there are always other ways. No matter how strong you are, every human has a breaking point that doesn't require the junk being cut off.

To be honest, torture is a tricky game not because of its brutal nature, but because of the chance that you can torture and even end up mutilating someone, and they might genuinely not know the information you're looking for.

No, I don't think it's justifiable. In little to no time, the torturer will lose himself and continue to over-torture the victim out of fun (human's nature) to a point where the victim fakes lies just to make him stop. That's not the case everytime tho! So, in general, I say no.

In my history class at high school, we talked about this, weirdly enough. I'd say it's justifiable, yes, but there's also a lot of variables that would shape the whole torturing process. Like, who is potentially going to be killed? How many would be killed? On and on and on.

I think this question depends on different things, so I can't give a simple "yes" or "no."

Alright. Then what about this?

Say there was a man who had planted high-powered explosives around a city in...I dunno...here in Australia. Like we thought someone did in the Martin Place incident. Say we manage to get him and we take him in to get the locations of the bombs. We have the option to torture the man, or to just question him for the sake of "integrity". What is more important here, a city with millions of people living in it, or our integrity and humanity?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not all for torture, as it's a very risky thing to do. There are just times when it may be necessary, and we need to put aside things such as honour and humanity.

OT: Eh, not all for it. But it may be necessary, and even then there are lots of things people need to consider when doing such a thing.
