I'm thinking you misunderstood the question, because you're talking about Sakura as she is now. A great Kunoichi and a medic. What I'm asking however is if an initial Hinata as we've seen her in the first few arcs, regardless of the path her character took in the series, has more potential than Sakura as a female lead. I am pretty certain of it, mainly because she was one of the first Konoha 12 to be given any significant development, and at the time, the path her character could take from there was quite interesting.

Not really because Sakura's path as a character was to get stronger and walk side by side with Naruto and Sasuke as an equal. Hinata's was just to get stronger so Naruto would notice her and so she could be by his side. Basically in short even as a MC her character would still revolve around Naruto.

That was Hinata's initial goal, the mark zero of her character. However, the goal you described Sakura to have was only developed later into her by the end of part 1. If given the same chance as Sakura I'm sure Hinata's character would have gone past getting Naruto to notice her much earlier on.

It wasn't though. That was Sakura's goal ever since the forest of death. Hinata threw part 1 wanted Naruto to notice her. In part 2 it was the same. Get stronger have Naruto notice her. In war arc. Naruto noticed her and she she reached her goal. Sakura had a legit goal Hinata's only goal was basically for her to get stronger so that her crush can notice her.

Almost any character has more potential than sakura, she is really just a cheaper/younger copy of tsunade, nothing else. At least Hinata is hyuuga, kishi would expand more on that. Sakura is empty, there's nothing to expand on.

Obviously. Hinata accomplished way more than Sakura given the screen time both received. Even now, Hinata is basically the main heroine and is more superior than Sakura. Replacing Sakura in the beginning with Hinata on team 7 would've been one of the best decisions Kishi could've made.

So yes her potential far exceeds that of Sakura.

Kishi should've killed Sakura at the end of part 1, that way people wouldn't have hated her as much as they do now after being disappointed over her repeated failures in Part 2. After selecting Sakura as main character in Part 1 Kishi simply didn't know what to do with Sakura who had almost no talent other than being a bookworm and that's why he sucked so bad at developing her in part 2.
Hinata on the other hand was a hyuga with their own unique taijutsu style and dojustsu. She'd have made a much better MC than Sakura, she already had superior chakra control plus under Tsunade she would've made a better Medical Ninja with her baykugan to aid. Hyuga's can release chakra throughout their body so Hinata could've taken CES to a whole other level. She woould've been a complete beast with with byakugou, super strength combined with gentle fist technique and later on with Rikudou chakra upgrade which would've brought her almost on par with Naruto and Sasuke justifying the name and power of the three Sanins.
