Did Hinata have more potential than Sakura as a female lead?

Speaking in a storytelling standpoint, of course. IMO, I would think so. She has a more interesting backstory with her clan issues and how her status as heiress was taken from her, an interesting power to be explored in the form of Byakugan, a personality with development potential but still likeable enough and an interesting relationship with the main lead.

Why not? I'm really struggling to see what kind of appeal Sakura might have had over her at that point in the series. Besides maybe representing the everyman in between two constantly strengthening individuals, I see nothing.

Sakura was someone who was born from nothing and became one of if not the strongest kunoichi in NV right now. In part 1 yea she was annoying but Hinata wouldn't be any better in fact she would have been worse. Hinata couldn't do anything when she's by Naruto. Then the fact that if Hinata and Sakura switched teams Naruto would be dead Hinata can't heal and Sakura actually saved him quite a few times.

Not really. Kishimoto can write pretty good women characters. Tsunade, Mei, Temari...none of them except maybe Tsunade were put in the spotlight for long, but I think that's enough proof something better could've come off it with a better premise.

Secondly....chill. Its just a hypothetical situation. Its not like Kishimoto's gonna see this thread and be all like, "Oh, yes, yes, yes, this guy's got it...I'll rewrite the manga and change the main lead from Sakura to Hinata, I'm gonna do it right now."

I'm thinking you misunderstood the question, because you're talking about Sakura as she is now. A great Kunoichi and a medic. What I'm asking however is if an initial Hinata as we've seen her in the first few arcs, regardless of the path her character took in the series, has more potential than Sakura as a female lead. I am pretty certain of it, mainly because she was one of the first Konoha 12 to be given any significant development, and at the time, the path her character could take from there was quite interesting.

I think that would've come out like a half assed plot twist if Neji continued playing such a side role as he had throughout Shippuden.
