His Mokuton surpresses chakra, along with his crystal pendant, that's how he controled them, , similar to how Yamato surpressed the kyuubi from escaping Naruto.
He did not have them sealed within himself, I know he's strong, but no one, and I mean NO ONE, is capable of surpressing that much power within themselves, the only exception being the SO6P. Especially if he didn't even know their names, and saw them as simply forces of destruction.

I think its pretty clear how the first controlled the beasts. The Konoha ninja are masters at sealing techniques. Jiraya, Kakashi, and the 4th all excelled at sealing Jutsu. The necklace of the 1st Hokage combined with even a fraction of his DNA was able to overpower the 9 tails chakra and strengthen the seal. Imagine the the sealing powers of the first Hokage combined with his full chakra. Removing a jinc from your body is a death sentence to anyone. Their chakra's are comfined within the same body so imagine having every gate opened all at once and removing it from your body. So no the first could not have simply given the tailed beasts from his body to the other nations. When you think about controlling tailed beasts who says they literally mean controlling them. Its clear in the most recent exchange between all the tailed beast they considered the sage of the sixth paths to be a friend and protector to them. Killerbee was able to convince the 8 tails that they could be friends. Who is to say that the first hokage's ideals did not win over some of the beasts the way that the sage was able to or even the way Naruto is winning over them now. The beasts are Jaded because ever since they were split from the sage the only ninja they have come into contact are ones that want to use them as weapons and seal them away. Kurama is a free spirit and most of his burning hatred comes from being used and manipulated and imprisoned. I'm just saying think about all the possibilities. My best guess is that the first was able to seal and gain the trust of some of the beasts before agreeing to give them to the other nations, like the 1 tail was given to the Sand and the 8 tails was given to the cloud. Its obvious that Naruto reminds the tailed beasts of the sage of the six paths and that they trust him enough to share their true names with him. My theory is that learning their true names allows them to fight as one and gives Naruto the ability to fight in some sort of full beast mode. Instead of having an I'm stealing your chakra and supressing your existence its like we are the same being and we are fighting as one. Just something I thought I would throw out.

He is suppressing the power it doesnt mean that it is tamed and could be used in battle
And if he inherited the sages body then that means he should be able to hold any beast within himself
Given that uchihas have the eyes and they can unlock all the forms of sharingan and even rinnegan

He was critically injured during the battle.I like how many fanboys think hashi beat madara's ass when he barely made it out alive thinking he killed Madara. ^^

He simply died becoz Kishi decided to no need to think about it.We all know who hashirama is , the 1st hokage probably most likely the most powerful one , after defeating madara who was left alive to defeat this power house , My theory is that he died for peace by removing the bijuus that he had in his possession , in order to balance the power of the villages to take a step forward in peace for all shinobi , giving the bijuus away was a way to build trust among the other shinobi clans or villages

My theory is if the body of the sage was able to contain the juubi , then the descendants of his younger son who inherited the body of the sage should be able to hold multiple bijuus at once Since the juubi is a combination of all those chakras . ,
At the hokage summit danzo stated that he was a perfect jinchuriki , being blessed with body and a powerful spirit which breed life evident in his wood style jutsu he should have been able to suppress bijuu chakra easily ..( yamato with a fraction of his ability can suppress the chakra ) .

This statement proves how strong he was but i doubt his power came from a regular chakra it had to be from bijuus as well that would explain why madara ran to find kyuubi to face him probably to level the playing field .
At the end of it all he decided to die for peace and balance in the world by extracting the tailed beasts within himself to build trust among ninjas since madara the biggest threat was thought to be dead and gone
