Well, the scan outright said he awakened the rinnegan, but Hagoromo having sharingan is debatable

The course of the story changed later, duo for unknown reasons, i guess because author wanted to finish manga soon as possible, but Hagoromo was never shown in the manga having sharingan, just as Indra first image having spiral eyes and later changed to have EMS (same as Sasuke) thats not right.... but the story moved on so....

He had to have something before rinnegan, but it could've been regular eyes, i guess.

They made it kind of clear that the Sharingan was created through Indra.

You need Ashura and Indra's chakra to awaken the Rinnegan. They got that from Hagoromo. The Sharingan is a delusion of his powers. Awakened the Rinnegan could mean anything from he had normal eyes, then one day when his powers grew/peaked he got the Rinnegan. Only uchiha transmigrants go from Sharingan to Rinnegan I.e. Madara and Sasuke.

Also do you know about "distance trait inheritance" which mean one individual never inherited any traits of his/her parents but distance family?

I have a friend that doesnt inherit his patents trait/facade but his grandfather.

So here Indra could be he inherited Sharingan from his granny but not Hagoromo.

But Hago was the one who put all the requirements to obtain a Rinnegan in place. Ashura and Indra's chakra that literally Hago's chakra split into two, Yin-Yang.

Hago is the source of both chakra inside Ashura and Indra so he(Hagoromo) awakening the Rinnegan bcus of his own chakra specialty and not bcus he has Uchiha chakra. Uchiha chakra came from Hagoromo's chakra but prior to that it just a one half of Hago's Yin chakra.

The process of awakening the Rinnegan eyes sure was different between Hago and Uchiha.

Anyway, what I'm telling you is it clearly states that the sharingan is the origin of the rinnegan. How he acquired it is another matter that is largely irrelevant in this case.

Obviously, the rinnegan is the combination of Uchiha and Senju chakra, which is combined and plainly otsutsuki chakra. We do know, however, based on what we've seen, that some form or aspect of death is needed for the Rinnegan. The Rinnegan isn't an eye that you just poof bam and behold. It came from something, like all things do. And to stretch, based on how Kinshki and Ole dude acted, the Rinnegan, although he had two on his palms, is a rarer dojutsu even among them, meaning not everyone can get it, like the mangekyo or ems.
