飛天御剣流 Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū ǂ Flying Heaven Govern Sword
Type: Ninkenjutsu
Background: Long ago in the early years following the extremely turbulent and violent days of the Warring States Era, Hiko Seijūrō was once a high ranking samurai whose loyalties were pledged with the Land of Iron. Unparallelled and bearing the knowledge of his self made kenjutsu style, Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū, Hiko undoubtedly had made a name for himself, and became the kenjutsu master for all samurai in the Land of Iron, teaching and training them at the palace.
When the large neighboring Land of Earth and its powerhungry damiyo Iwano desired to take over its smaller neighbor, the ruling clan decided to sue for peace, and give their daughter, Princess Natsu, hand in marriage and as a peace offering to Iwano. However, Princess Natsu was highly reluctant to be married to such a man, and came to hide in the residence of Hiko's estate, both of whom had affection for each other. Though she wished to be at his side forever and to run away from her domain's state of affairs with him, Hiko declined for the sake of all within Land of Iron against the threat of the First Tsuchikage, despite his own feelings for her.
Shortly after Iwano's and Natsu's marriage, First Tsuchikage underhandedly deceived the samurai's ruling clan and had ordered all of them to death after laying siege to its castle. But, even after its own demise of its ruling clan, the remaining nobility and samurai of iron still held hope on the one man with the sword that could kill one hundred in one stroke to bring back peace to their domain- And so, did Hiko make his way to the battlefield.
Cutting swaths through the shinobi forces of Earth Country, Hiko's campaign led him to save the life of a farmer boy named Isshinta. Upon meeting him however, the excited Isshinta unfortunately complicated matters for Hiko, with a retreating shinobi making way back to the head camp and with the clinging Isshinta forcing him to retreat as well.
With the word of his arrival, the Tsuchikage's forces came in numbers and scouted of his whereabouts. Hiding and resting in a valley crevasse with the help of the new moon's darkness, the two bide until morning to make an escape. Disturbed by his rest by a nightmare, Hiko and Isshinta came to learn that both shared a loved one by the name of Natsu, and grew to know more about another. While Isshinta told of his close girlfriend, Hiko made mention of Princess Natsu, whom he felt ashamed to talk about, as he felt that, as he had abandoned her in her time of need, he did not feel worthy of her feelings anymore. Isshinta countered that his obligations to his domain were not wrong, and that it was the greedy ambition of Iwano that came between them.
As Isshinta came to remind Hiko that he was the Land of Iron's last hope for peace, praised as the hero who would save them from the villainous Iwano, and the only one who could save Princess Natsu, Hiko would be forced into battle upon being discovered. Wishing Isshinta to leave the battlefield alive to the one that waits for him, and feeling that his time has come, Hiko gives him the Fuyutsuki for travel collateral, despite his objections.
Even armed with only the Kogetsu, his wakazashi, Hiko still remains unfettered by Nagumo's forces- Until he is cornered by Iwano to a duel himself and subdued with their secret trump card. With his armor barely holding defense against the onslaught, Iwano makes it known of Natsu longing for Hiko, and is sickened of her sadness, wishing to quell it upon bringing her his dead body along with their victory over the Samurai. Facing certain death and Iwano's victory to be fulfilled, Hiko contemplates his last moments- Until he realizes that the new moon bears no crescent moon at all.
With Isshinta having come back to give him his sword, no matter what doubt Hiko spoke of, Isshinta made his way through the enemy infantry. Shouting with all his might, Isshinta also made it clear of his duty that, even though he did not want to perish in war to see his Natsu, Princess Natsu's tears never stop in sake of Hiko, and that if he were to die, they would never stop even after his death. On the border of life and death, Hiko realizes the truth of her love for him, and charges forward, brandishing his Fuyutsuki again and saving Isshinta. Making his victory to be known, Hiko finishes the duel between him and Iwano, stopping the last bullet by jamming the barrel with tossing the Kogetsu, and decisively pulling forward victory by slaying Iwano with the Hiten Mugen Zan.
As days pass and Hiko continues his campaign against Nagumo, that winter would see him make a successful rescue of his beloved Princess Natsu and siege of Iwano's castle. As the last days of the war pass over into late spring, he and Natsu would be betrothed and married. Sojourning along with Isshinta back to his home village, it would be known now that Hiko Seijuro and Natsu would become the new damiyo of the Land of Iron. He would go on to pass his teaching to a single high ranked Samurai who showed great aptitude on the battle field.
Description on the Abilities and Inner Workings of the Style:
Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū (飛天御剣流, Flying Heaven Govern Sword-Style) is an ancient kenjutsu style from the Land of Iron, developed to allow a single samurai to defeat numerous foes single-handedly created by Hiko Seijūrō I. Rooted in the concept of ichi no tachi, or to strike in a single blow, practitioners of this style use a combination of immense speed and agility, battōjutsu, and acquired, observation-based pseudo-clairvoyance that permits a practitioner to anticipate an opponent's movements. Both offensive and defensive maneuvers are executed with minimal movement to increase a practitioner's ability to counter-attack and to conserve energy.
The style commonly has the user keep one hand on the sheath at all times and stresses two-step attacks to ensure that the practitioner is never off guard while executing said attacks and allows the user to use the sheath as a shield to block attacks. Arguably, its most well-known trait is the surreal speed practitioners of this style use in battle (known as Shinsoku, or godspeed), allowing the user to accelerate, maneuver, and strike at speeds most eyes are unable to properly follow. This allows the user to close considerable distance in seconds and strike down enemies before they can react.
Due to its tremendous power and speed, Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū has been nicknamed "The Black Ship of the Land" in that it would almost certainly secure absolute victory for whichever side might wield it in a conflict. In light of this probability, the practitioners of Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū have historically maintained independence of any and all political entities, stressing highly the importance of wielding its expertise in the name of their fellow man. All generations of practitioners receive a great deal of insight regarding the human condition from the school's teachings. This includes instruction regarding the relativism of morality and the idea that perceptions of good and evil are not absolute; a potentially "good" human being can have any number of beliefs that may not mesh with those of the practitioner without necessarily being wrong. Other core tenants of the style include the idea the art of swordsmanship ultimately amounts to nothing more than a way to kill other human beings, regardless of the practitioner's intentions or beliefs, and that the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū should never be used to improve a practitioner's social standing, acquire wealth, or obtain political power. Finally, while heirs are encouraged to protect the defenseless and less fortunate, the Hiten Mitsurugi school ultimately permits its practitioners to execute individuals whom they deem to be truly deserving of death.
As powerful as it may be, Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū can also be detrimental to its practitioners. Medically speaking, the physical demands for Hiten Mitsurugi are tremendous. For anyone ill-equipped, simply employing their techniques causes cumulative, physical damage to their body. The style is essentially a "superman's sword art" requiring someone with an incredibly athletic body to use effectively in the long term. Normally, the training provided during apprenticeship enables a practitioner to condition themselves properly. Practitioners tend to develop an extraordinarily resilient physique with an incredible musculature. This is just an example of the necessary conditioning for practitioners of the style to perform without incurring the cumulative trauma from regular usage. By comparison, if you were to leave training early, the practitioner may stunt his body's development resulting in a leaner, more fragile frame which culminate into progressive issues after mastering the style. Without proper training practitioners could cause irreparable damage to muscle tissue, decimating the agility and speed needed to exercise the more advanced techniques of the Hiten Mitsurugi. But, with proper and regular training, the style serves as a veritable "fountain of youth" enabling practitioners to suppress the aging process. Giving older practitioners, a very young adult appearance.
Aside from the physical training needed to preform the style practioners focus on Battōjutsu (抜刀 battōjutsu: "drawing blade technique"), a field of kenjutsu (剣術, "Sword Techniques") which deals specifically with the rapid drawing and sheathing of a sword. It is the predecessor of the art of Iaidō (居合道, "way of re-sheathing/quick-drawing") a Japanese martial art that emphasizes being aware and capable of quickly drawing the sword and responding to a sudden attack; though their differences stem from the fact that Iaido is much like Kendo as a form of spiritual training and sport, where Battojutsu practices and studies the dynamics of sword drawing and hand eye coordination regarding live action factors of timing, distance, targeting, and the specifics of one's sword, including its size and blade, to strike readily. It is hence practiced with live swords, in contrast to kata and sparring needs eventually developing the safer bokken and shinai.
In most cases, a katana being drawn from its sheath moves with a much greater speed and force than when it is being wielded normally. Additionally, greater drawing speed gives a swordsman more of an advantage in combat than an opponent whose speed is inferior. This is due in part to the fact that a katana's sharp blade curves upward against the inside of the sheath, allowing the swordsman to use more strength in drawing it without having to worry about applying extra control to his movements - the sword's path is guided by the sheath while the blade meets no resistance, moving two to three times faster than normal. The same is implemented with Nōtōjutsu (sheathed-blade techniques).
Example Techniques:
Unnamed Technique
Rank: A
Type: Attack/Defense
Range: Short
Chakra: 30
Damage: 60
Description: Most effective when surrounded by enemies as this technique has the user spin to attack in all directions. It can also be used as a counterattack against a thrust or charge, one sidesteps a forward-moving opponent and moves past them. In doing so, one spins in a full circle, adding momentum and centrifugal force to the strength of the sword swing, which is then aimed at either the opponent's back or the back of the neck.
Sōryūsen
Rank: B
Type: Attack/Defense
Range: Short
Chakra: 20
Damage: 40
Description: Seemingly a simple Battōjutsu strike, Sōryūsen is the first of Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū's two-step Battōjutsu moves. After the first strike with the quickened sword, the user wields the empty sheath along the same path as a blunt weapon. After the sword strike lands, the sheath strike delivers a pulverizing blow capable of crushing bone and shattering wood, but if the sword strike misses, the sheath strike acts as powerful insurance, preventing an opponent's attack and delivering a crushing blow when it's least expected.
Unnamed Technique
Rank: A
Type: Supplementary/Attack
Chakra: 30
Damage: 60
Description: – An unusual technique in which one uses the godspeed of Battōjutsu to sheathe the sword rather than to draw it in a practice known as Shinsoku Nōtōjutsu (神速納刀術, Godspeed Sheathed Blade Technique). The speed and force creates a miniature sonic boom that can be used to temporarily stun opponents with particularly sensitive or acute hearing by affecting their auditory nerves.
Additional effects and Restrictions:
The physical demands required for practitioners to effectively be conditioned to peak athleticism at all times. As previously mentioned, not maintaining a trained body can prove to be detrimental and thus for those not specialized or new in the sword style it can prove quite strenuous on the muscles. This drawback is overcome with enough training however, as mentioned, if not specializing in the style causes damaging effects as the practitioner will not possibly be able to meet the physical demand required. (Damage calculation determined based on rank of technique)
For those who specializes in the sword style, they have a very well trained body and can withstand most minor cuts and contusions and low rank taijutsu up to C-rank. Masters of the style can easily read the movements of opponents just from body movement and can easily react in situations where there is little time.
To begin training the following criteria must be met:
- Must be at least S-class.
- Taijutsu/Kenjutsu/NarutoBase Taijutsu must be completed.
- Taijutsu and/or Kenjutsu must be listed as specialty in the bio.
Declined: A LOT of this is Superfluous information, and doesn't really have much place in the Inner Workings/Abilities section. As the name implies, that portion of the submission is devoted to how the style will be used in battle. Not cosmetic dangers towards its users, that can be included in the Background. Overall though, this just seems like a more “hyped” Iaido.
