Obviously background checks.......

You don't know very much about guns do you? There are low recoil pistols, that are made for smaller people. She's not carrying around a shotgun lol.

She has law enforcement training, he has none. He doesn't even know how to use a gun (or didn't in the past).

Regardless of what you think, it worked for her and it's over now.

1. You obviously dont know how the government works.
2. You are quoting a movie......a MOVIE. Its not helping your case.

I obviously don't care how the government works. The president is just being controlled by the powers that be. Call me a conspiracy theorist, or whatever. I honestly don't care.

I am quoting a movie, regardless the quote is good. Number of persons in a government is significantly lower then the non government population of a country. Strength in numbers.

What is my case anyway? I don't own a gun nor will I probably ever. I have no use for a gun. Oh, yes I could if I wanted one just have no use for one. My original point was if someone is dedicated enough, they can obtain a gun UNLESS guns were non-existent.

I wanted to agree with this, but the fact is gun>pepperspray in 99.9% of situations. Most people in that situation are pretty unqualified to defend themselves in that situation with just that and against a gun. If someones kicking down your door you cant pepper spray them through a peep hole, but you can blow a hole straight through the door and them.

well there are other non lethal weapons, like tasers or guns with rubber bullets and i'm sure lots of other stuff. but if a criminal is really after you to kill you with a weapon and not just to get money then maybe the problem is with the person and not the gun. i'm pretty sure that 90% of people are not facing a life or death situation with criminals and don't have to kill to protect themselves.

Oh gosh, its another one of those lol, you funny.
Your two statements are contradictory, if the government is or should be scared of the people, then there is no need to exaggerate the gun increment on the population.

This is the attitude of the cold war. Nuclear Deterrents don't work. Protection or not, this right gives everyone the right to the ability to murder and rob people at will.

Even if owning a gun protects you from one mugger, it also allowed 10 muggers to be born due to easy access.

Then so be it, at least it would have protected me. The is the logic I am getting at. If I know that I would use it responsibly, then my safety goes up, even at the cost of having crime increased.

About nuclear deterrents, they do work, no nuclear power has ever waged full scale war against another nuclear power. A lot of research has gone into why this would be so. But thats besides the point. Guns are not about deterence. It's about providing one with a safety net when a crime occurs.

Maybe, but what if one encounters that rare criminal with full on body armor and a rapid fire assault rifle?

What if one falls into that unlucky 10%

I don't think tasers would work here.

If someone pulls a gun at you, odds are you'll be dead before you reach for yours.

Still, your chances are increased if you have a gun. It can't hurt to have one.

i don't hear of many criminals going in a bullet proof vest and machine gun just mowing down civilians who happens to stand by. or breaking into someone's house just to kill him for no reason and steal nothing. i'm afraid too many people wouldn't know the diffrence between killing someone to protect themselves or killing someone because they thought they were in danger.

it can hurt if you don't really need one. as i said a gun is designed to kill, not to protect. if you really feel that unprotected why not go to sleep with your own bullet proof vest so that bullets have a lower chance of hitting you?

No it can't. How can it possibly hurt to own a gun?

aside from shooting someone to death because you own a gun and can do that now, you are right, it doesn't hurt at all.

Doesn't mean it can't happen.

doesn't mean we should hand guns to everyone who asks. we might as well carry hand grenades around the house for protection, much higher chance of killing someone with them wouldn't you agree?

Please don't twist my words. It's never dangerous to the owner if they have a gun. It's only dangerous to potential threats.

That is what I meant. It doesn't hurt the owner. get it? If you wake up with superman powers, its a good thing not a bad one right? Because nothing can hurt you if you wake up with Superman powers. Of course you can destroy the world being like Superman, but you won't because you are still you.

In the case of guns, if you have one, why get rid of it? Sure, it's not like a gun gives you superman powers, but guns do make you more powerful nonetheless. More power is always better than less.

Of course not. Only hand them to the responsible.

Obviously grenades have much higher collateral damage, defeating the entire purpose of self defense.

"With great power comes greate responsibility" - uncle ben

superman was powerful, that is true, and he could help and protect people because he was powerful. he also made a lot of enemies, that wanted to hurt him or hurt his friends to get to him. and because superman was powerful his enemies had to become more powerful and more destructive. his powers brought him no peace of mind or stability, it made it so he would have to constantly be afraid of danger, be aware of who is around him. villians would endanger innocent people just to get to superman, which is why he had to hide his identity of clark kent. because great power can bring great demise and suffering.

more power is more danger, i don't understand why hand grenades are an overreaction but guns are not. why is that not a valid phrase for you? : "guns have much higher collateral damage (then no guns), defeating the entire purpose of self defense".

Without a gun, a person is completely defenseless, completely. That is defeating the entire purpose of self defense.

Also, people don't go after you just because you have a gun. How would they even know?

You are taking the superman analogy too far. I am just saying that if you were born with superman's powers, its better to keep them then give them up, all else being equal. It called tactics. What if the roof collapses in a earthquake, well, being superman would sure help wouldn't it?

guns won't stop bullets from hitting you, but they will draw bullets to you if you point a gun at a robber.

if you shot a criminal or wave your gun at them, they would know, and because the criminal's life is now threatened he might start shooting back, in his own self defense need. if you hit someone they will hit you back, if you shot someone they will shot back, if you don't hit them you won't get hurt and if you don't shot them you won't get hurt. and if they hit you or shot you regardless i suggest you run as far as you can and as fast as you can because a moving target at a distance is harder to hit, giving you a higher chance of not getting hit.

this is where your analogy breaks down, superman's sueprhuman strengh will help him protect people if the roof collapses, but a gun doesn't have any such defensive properties. if a buss loses it's breaks and come running at you a gun wouldn't do much good, it's only good for killing people, and killing people is a poor way to save people.

Obviously it is true that if you shoot, they would shoot back. That's why people use their judgment on these types of things. If, they have a knife, pull out the gun. If they have a gun, shoot them if they drop their guard. It's that simple.

If gun prevents you from being attacked by crazed bad guy, then yes, it would have saved you. Would it have killed the crazed bad guy? Yes, but so what?

that gun wouldn't stop the bullets from his gun from hitting you. your judgment is on where can i use my gun, not on how i get out of this situation alive.

If, they have a knife, pull out the fake gun and scare them. If they have a gun, sit silent and don't get yourself shot at. if they shot you without you doing anything then just run like hell, as standing in place with your front to them trying to aim at them will give you a higher chance of being hit by bullets.

think about it this way, if i pulled out a gun and pointed at you shouting that i'm going to kill you, and you have a gun as well. you would probably shot me to death. but if i didn't have a gun and didn't threaten you, you wouldn't have taken it out and shot me. conclusion? people with guns are the main target of the criminals and the first ones to die in robberies. because they made themselves a high threat by showing their gun.
